Hanoi-based photographer Nguyen Thanh Hai or Maika Elan first found herself gravitating first towards lomography after graduating from university with a degree in sociology, then swiftly moved on to shoot professionally for editorial and fashion clients in Vietnam. She recently made the switch to documenting life via her images. Her series, The Pink Choice, shows gay couples sharing their lives together with a lot of tenderness.

This is a real life, fire-breathing dragon bridge. And you thought dragons weren’t real. This amazing, 666-meter long steel bridge was built in order to celebrate the 38th anniversary of the Vietnam War ending. It literally breathes fire and water out into the air. The Son Doong Cave in Vietnam might just be the world’s largest cave. Nicknamed The Infinite Cave, the biggest chamber of Son Doong is more than five kilometers long, 200 meters high, and 150 meters wide. These photographs only capture just a small part of this enormous cave, which features a fast-flowing river and even its own forest. Traditional recipes and fresh ingredients are key components for founder and owner Tu Anh Nguyen and being in a market situation is no exception. Everything from freshly prepared rice paper rolls (quite a rarity in Sydney) to crispy spring rolls will be on offer and the whole menu is gluten free. We love Streets of Saigon so much that we invited them to serve up their fresh and light bites at our recent Lost At E Minor Sydney party. Get down to Sydney’s Hyde Park on a week night between 5pm and 10pm October 3-19 or hit Sydney Westifeld’s food court to feast your way to fulfillment.

There’s a lot to be said about Marou, Faiseurs de Chocolat, the first single-origin, artisanal chocolatier in Vietnam. Based in Ho Chi Minh City, Marou, Faiseurs de Chocolat is one of the only bean-to-bar chocolatiers in the world to produce chocolate at its place of origin.

The work of two Frenchmen, cacao for the bars are grown and sourced locally – as is the cane sugar – from small farms throughout southern Vietnam. The result is a unique handmade chocolate, which is then hand-wrapped in stunning packaging. Silk-screen printing on antique gold wrappers delicately conceals the Vietnamese chocolate inside. Each bar is named for the region where the beans were sourced and the rich, earthy colors were inspired by the hues of the cacao pods. Regrettably, unless a Vietnamese adventure is in your immediate future, the chocolate is still hard to snag.

Madeline Valentine creates the most haunting illustrations. What makes her work so amazing is the juxtaposition of her soft, dreamlike aesthetic with the thoroughly intense subject matter that she employs, a contrast that could easily come off as contrived if not executed so beautifully. I find myself especially drawn to her Vietnam series, which are utterly breathtaking in their simplicity and intensity. The restraint is what makes them so truly haunting, like bits and pieces of fuzzy memories that one can never entirely forget. Only one year out of school, I can’t wait to see where Madeline’s work goes from here.
