Lincoln, Nebraska may not be as well-known for its music scene as Omaha, but local four-piece UUVVWWZ (don’t try to pronounce it) blows any band on Saddle Creek out of the water. Their exuberant sound falls somewhere between Deerhoof and Zs, with frontwoman Teal Gardner’s frantic yelping, guitarist Jim Schroeder’s abstract shredding, and drummer Tom Ambroz and bassist Dustin Wilbourn pounding out mechanically precise, start-and-stop rhythms. The band is rumored to be about to sign to Saddle Creek, but don’t expect anything they do to sound like The Faint.

How old must Kermit be now? Not to old to collaborate with skater-friendly retailer Supreme and photographer Terry Richardson. Kermit, who usually wears nothing, has been hooked up with some new threads to advertise the brand. It seems Kermit and Terry are the perfect work partners: they’ve even released a video clip documenting the shoot.
The urban planning for Dubai increasingly has the city looking more and more like a still out of a Jetsens episode. The futuristic architecture that charcterises its evolution is pushing the boundaries of design, the buildings climbing ever upwards with their blindingly original facades. Apparently Dubai is home to between 15 and 25 percent of the world’s 125,000 construction cranes, which is hardly surprising. This image above is a sneak preview of how the famed Dubai waterfront will look in a few years time.
The Big Picture’s photo essays are some of the best around: insightful, timely and often confronting in the way great photo essays are. Complementing The Big Picture is The Big Caption, a parody site ‘wherein jokes and statements are made using typography’. Sometimes insightful and always snarky, it pairs poignant photography with blunt observations using a thread of hostility. Read more
Last week when the 2008 ARIA nominations were released, I was so happy to see the recognition of Melbourne’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Their album Primary Colours is pure, unadulterated Aussie rock, standing out from the numerous electro releases we’ve had this year. The band manages to capture that wonderful pub-vibe without any pretension or tragic nostalgia. Primary Colours speaks to people who still seek an existence that is all about wearing ripped jeans, loitering and punching people in the face … not in a violent way, but because your fist flailed in that direction while you were thrashing around front of stage.
