Isn’t Mike Tyson that psychotic ex-heavyweight champion who speaks with a slight lisp and looks like he’d struggle to finish a ten-piece jigsaw? Yes, he is. So doesn’t a film where he tells his own story, in his words, sound like it’d be about as coherent as a dog trying to bark out the instructions on how to build a space shuttle? It did to me, but if you’re going to pass judgement on a film you do need to see it first. Which I did, and Tyson is superb. Iron Mike is a natural storyteller, probably helped by some clever editing. But best of all, he is brutally honest throughout. Read more
It’s time you were be able to judge a book by its cover (something that I wished worked for wine, too). A handful of MFA Illustration grads from the School of Visual Arts decided to form a somewhat atypical book club by combining their interests for art and reading. The idea is a simple one: Read a book. Design a cover for it.
Evan Stremke, a graphic designer from Wisconsin, has given us a morbid history lesson. The continuous subject of his marvelous poster series, Invitation To An Assassination, is the forced death of outstanding public figures. The Osama Bin Laden poster is, of course, already in the making. I’m not sure what to think of the subject matter, but I love the artistic execution. Read more
I ran a series of 80s nights in New York last year — showing cult 80s movies and playing classic cuts from that era of kitsch and spice — purely so I could spin After The Fire’s Der Kommissar over and over. Yessir, this was the future of music in 1983. Pity no one was listening.

It is, instead, the facade of the Wotruba Church, built between 1974 and 1976 and located in the beautiful Austrian suburb of Mauer, the 23rd district of Vienna. Vintage Kids Books My Kid Loves is a great resource for people looking for gift ideas or simply for those who dig the artwork in out-of-print and esoteric children’s books from years past. The author provides reviews from the perspective of a parent, not merely a hobbyist.
When you first hear William Elliot Whitmore’s voice, it’s hard to believe he isn’t a grizzled old man. The baritone-voiced one-man-band does rousing bar room ballads on the banjo and guitar that are sure to send shivers down your spine. On closer listen, Whitmore’s voice does seem slightly affected. But like Tom Waits before him, his voice is likely to age like a good scotch.
