The most delicious design publication of 2012 celebrates design and art for, and from, what is edible. EAT! serves week by week inspiration in the form of delicious designs to whet your appetite; with 54 designers, artists and architects illuminating visual trends and special designs from the area of food, drink and nutrition.

The design calendar documents the exciting results of creative work which, in turn, influences food culture: be it product, graphics or interior design, an architectural project or fine art. This collection of pieces tells us about contemporary projects and provides plenty of inspiration and ideas; with all sorts of culinary art installations and happenings, smart products, special food photography, brand design and graphics to do with food culture.

Following the trend in the much appreciated and multiple-awarded issues from the EIGA trend research series — DesignerHeads (2007), DesignerTreasures (2008), DesignerTravels (2009), Think Green! Design To Save The World (2010), Play! Design For Kids (2011) — an individually designed, experimental typography also plays a central role in this project.

Doug Wilson, Brandon Goodwin, and Jess Heugel are currently putting together a feature-length documentary on the linotype machine, invented by Ottmar Mergenthaler in 1886: ‘The Linotype completely transformed the communication of information similarly to how the internet is now changing communication again. Although these machines were revolutionary, technology began to supersede the Linotype and they were scrapped and melted-down by the thousands. Today, very few machines are still in existence’. It’s going to be a film that is bound to make an impression. Pun intended.

The Buchstabenmuseum is definitely one of the more interesting museums I’ve been to in Berlin. It’s a small museum dedicated to the preservation of typefaces that are used in signage.

Letters of all sizes and from a wide-variety of sources seem to be enjoying their retirement here. It’s a unique place worth checking out and the tightly packed rooms allow you to get a close-up look at the design and weathered scars of all the letters.

Steven Bussey’s take on Sia’s Academia is an interesting and mesmerizing take on kinetic typography, and the perfect soundtrack for any rainy Summer day.

The latest in the Off Book series from PBS, this video explores the diversity of typographic expression in everything from poster design to infographics. Off Book: Type features conversations with graphic designer Paula Scher, font designers Tobias Frere-Jones and Jonathan Hoefler, the experimental designer Eddie Opara, and cutting-edge info-graphic creators, Deroy Peraza and Julia Vakser.

Anthony Burrill is one of my favourite graphic designers. His work combines a love of typography and cross-platform collaboration. He recently worked with Happiness Brussells to create a limited edition poster for charity using oil from the Gulf of Mexico disaster.

I have been a fan of ESPO, aka Steve Powers, for a while now. There’s something about the mix of street art, typography, and kind of Emo messages that gets me every time. Haha. I actually named my mixtape, Never Say Never, after being inspired by this piece. At the time, it was just was fitting to what was going on around me.

In Baile Átha Cliath, we live amongst typography. It influences and informs our every day lives in Dublin, Ireland. This typography-led mini-film was directed and shot in and around central Dublin on February 25.

Sydney artist Numskull recently unveiled his latest series of prints, paintings and installations titled The Weird Machine at Sydney’s Lo-Fi Collective Gallery. I love the bold typography, icon and stencil juxtapositions.

Graphic design posters to music videos instead of movies, events or books? That seems new. Italian designer Federico Mancosu has created a cool set of posters for tracks by such artists as Depeche Mode, Beck, The Chemical Brothers and Jamiroquai.

Brooklyn-based Scott Albrecht is a typographic fine art genius. From drawings and painting to woodwork, fonts and co-founding Process, it seems like there’s nothing Albrecht can’t do. On the eve of his solo exhibition, SOMETHING MISTAKEN FOR NOTHING, I caught up with Albrecht and found that he is as colourful and witty as his work.

This series by Russian-based Yulia Brodskaya combines intricate paper art with brilliantly conceptual typography in a colourful flourish of artistic elegance.

This beautiful Marbling Typeface was created by Tiana Vasiljev after a visit to a museum in South Vietnam: ‘each character was created, shaped and photographed individually to create these abstract fonts. The project involved creating and capturing the organic forms that come naturally with the marbling process. All 26 letters of the alphabet were created in upper-case letters’.

Ok, so faced with the option of scrawling anything in beautiful flower type on the blank canvas that the Flower Power website presents, we went for something simple. Creative, huh? No. But this website sure is. Imagination required.

Disguised in the streets of Lisbon as just another old relic lies the latest work from Faile, the Brooklyn based street art collective. The newly constructed Faile Temple transforms modern typography, stencils and print into mosaics, carvings, and ruin in one of the largest modern art projects ever to take place in Portugal. Bringing together young and old (some rather cautiously), the piece is a worthy comment on religion as a social artifact, and a reflection of the times.

Music Philosophy describes itself as ‘a weekly graphic-typographic interpretation of philosophical song quotes’. I like to describe it as the coolest way to enjoy songs weekly without having to listen to them.

Mico Toledo (the creator of Music Philosophy) takes lyrics that people submit to the site and turns them into striking imagery. With lyrics from bands like The Beatles, Radiohead, and even Jay Z, you are sure to find something that fits your taste. Order a poster and get ready to make all of your indie friends jealous. Or in my case, Justin Bieber fans — Biebettes, for short.

To Dry For is a boutique collection of designer and artist-commissioned tea towels that are bound to brighten up any drying journey, from dishes to spills to all things in between. These colorful towels sport bold patterns, intricate designs, and impressive typography that range from cheeky to clever to beautiful. Managed by a husband and wife team out of Oxford, England, these sweet charmers are simply to try ‘dry’ for.

The Big Picture’s photo essays are some of the best around: insightful, timely and often confronting in the way great photo essays are. Complementing The Big Picture is The Big Caption, a parody site ‘wherein jokes and statements are made using typography’. Sometimes insightful and always snarky, it pairs poignant photography with blunt observations using a thread of hostility.

Unfortunately, I only became familiar with Edward Rondthaler after his passing last year, but his incredible contributions to typography (one of the founding members of the International Typeface Corporation) and crusade to fight illiteracy through spelling reform of the English language will continue to live on. House Industries shot a video of Rondthaler giving a simple and compelling presentation for his cause.
