Thanks to a paper that gleaned geolocation data from 1,535,929,521 tweets from 71,273,997 unique users in Oct 23-Nov 30 last year, some fabulous maps showing a month in the life of Twitter were generated. The world of Twitter, as you can see, is beautiful.

Twaggies is a website that takes funny tweets from Twitter, and creates quirky visual interpretations from them. It was launched back in 2009 by editor and web producer David Israel. More than two dozen artists and illustrators have since teamed up to make the site what it is today.

If you haven’t been brushing up on news about Florida lately, try following Florida Man, a brilliant Twitter feed that tracks the none-too-subtle antics of, well, said Florida Man as he makes news headlines like ‘Florida Man Arrested While Sunbathing Naked And Holding Rubber Penis’ and ‘Florida Man Shoots And Kills Roommate Over Pork Chop‘. The Twitter feed purportedly has its origins in a screengrab of Florida Man that circulated on Reddit, mocking him as ‘a terrible superhero’. Of course, if it makes to the news, it’s either tragic or funny. Or, like in this case, it’s both.

Just when you think ‘omg’ has knocked all exclamational intent to its simplest form, along comes ‘ermahgerd’, which makes ‘omg’ sound even more juvenile. And now We’ve just discovered the existence of the ermahgerdBot, a Twitter bot that basically retweets anyone who goes ‘ermahgerd’ in their tweets. Created by two sisters from Cebu, Philippines, it’s probably not 100% bot because we spotted some very human replies from its page. It’s definitely very entertaining though.

Whoever’s behind the Death Star PR Twitter account purports he or she is here to set things straight about the rubbish people say about the Galactic Empire, thus the ballistic tweets like ‘Anakin wasn’t trying to kill Obi-Wan on Mustafar.

He was just trying to high five him. Lots. In the face. With a lightsaber.’ Sometimes the tweets stray into well-meaning but not always helpful tips for living life, like ‘#NationalTextYourExDay: IT’S A TRAP!!!’. They’re always entertaining, though.

#firstworldproblems is a popular hashtag that’s never quite gone out of fashion on Twitter. The whining is all meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek in a ‘poor me, but I’m not really suffering’ way. So when DDB New York got Haitians to stand around in their spartan surroundings and read out first world problems in a video commercial, it brilliantly put everything in context. No wonder then, that the clip — made to promote awareness for Haitian charity WATERisLIFE — has gone viral.
