This is one for all you aspiring indie bands out there: Jordan Holman and Mark LeRoy of the Toronto indie band Vas Vega sent their four song demo off to the five producers that they most wanted to work with. Remarkably, it all happened for them. Two months later they were in London recording with Chris Potter (Rolling Stones, U2, The Verve). with the first taste from that session the beautiful single above. The video was directed by Jonathan Bensimon.

Toronoto-based guitarist and vocalist Adam Cooper explained to me that he wants to make people sick with his band, Orn, much the way French shock films such as Irreversible do. When the trio hit the stage at the Smiling Buddha in Toronto, I understood exactly what he meant. Read more

We checked in with Jimmy Shaw from Toronto group, Metric, and asked him about the music that inspired their latest recording, Fantasies. He started by propping the Rolling Stones’ classic, Exile On Main Street: ‘I set up a turntable because my friend left all of his DJ records at my house for a year and a half. It’s the only non hip-hop record, which is funny because all they were doing was trying to sound black. Either way, the record is warped and sounds awesome’. I’m loving Brad Woodfin’s latest body of work he made for a recent show at Sloan Fine Art. Full of his traditional chiaroscuro-style paintings of animals, his paintings always look fresh. Read more

With just a limited, two-toned palette of acrylics, A. Andrew Gonzalez renders incredibly detailed images, mainly of goddesses and sirens, that look as if they’ve been carved in relief out of marble. Read more

Oh boy, this is fun. Omaha’s Tilly and the Wall are kitsch-cool-camp-vauderville meets pop-folk-flamenco, with a tap dancer for a drummer and some serious, serious charisma for a calling card.

71 is the kind of place which is small enough to miss, but once you see it, you realize everyone somehow knows about it. It’s set three steps down from the sidewalk level, and it’s always packed, except for week late nights and mid-mornings. Even though their service is not the friendliest — like any other spot in New York that’s too cool for school — 71 has a noticeably loyal clientele. Lots of writers hang out with their computers, while photographers check out the scene, and artists meet up with their reps. Besides hot and cold drinks, including their own coffee, they also offer a great selection of pastries, sandwiches and my friend Nicolas’ favorite chicken soup ever.

Grinning Cat is a beautiful electronic album from prodigious Japanese producer, Susumu Yokota. It borrows liberally from the melodic melancholy of classical music and features subtle drum loops throughout. We interviewed him about the artwork that he creates for each release. Read more

While I feel I am not alone in breathing a sigh of relief over this season’s purging of fluoro, in retrospect there was a lot to be learned from the experience: don’t wear all fluoro, or don’t wear fluoro at all. And we slowly trudged back to black, which, despite what other colors may think, will always be the new black. Read more

On this Virgin Mary HaloTech watch, the dial is a modern version of the nineteenth century art form of lithophanes, carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images. When the pusher is activated, the dial springs to life in 3D. The watch features a light-up dial, LED light, and afterglo effect. Read more
