The video description includes the tantalizing if somewhat doubtful promise that ‘Cookie Monster should get through the entire Waits oeuvre in roughly 537 years, give or take a decade…’

Tom Waits has many famous songs, and the Eyeball Kid, the titular character from one of them, has turned up on Etsy as a crochet creation. Crafted by classically trained soprano Aileen Robinson, this Eyeball Kid is made of acrylic yarn, comes with a detachable brimmed hat, and looks kind of homeless. You can adopt the blue-eyed boy — erm, sorry, ball — for just 22 bucks. That’s a pretty good steal.

Having been shot in November 2011, Philadelphia-based videographer and musician Quinn Arlington Waters (aka Caffeine Machine) is no stranger to traumatic encounters. The video for his single, Nothing To Me, states as much. It uses hauntintingly powerful horn and string arrangements as atmosphere to paint a cinematic one-shot of gore-less voilence. Played from end to beginning, the video follows 3 minutes and 20 seconds of a woman who … I don’t want to spoil the end … errrr … beginning for you.

We recently made a stop in Boise on our US tour to play an in-store on a Monday evening on a night we didn’t have a show. Didn’t know what to expect, but what we found was a treasure. The Record Exchange has been there for 30 years. The staff was so kind, the record and movie selection was vast, and they had a coffee bar.
After we played our set in a nice little performance space to a nice sized crowd, they had a Tom Waits listening party for his new record that came out that day. It made me want to take my head out of digital music buying and spend more time in local indie record stores. There’s no place like them. I met a guy who has shopped and hung out at Record Exchange for 30 years and said he’d move if it ever closed.

I’m ashamed to admit that after 26 years on this planet, I only recently started listening to the outstanding musical offerings of Tom Waits. However, it is true that he does sound a little like the Cookie Monster. This video collides their worlds to joyous effect.
