It’s been a surreal, full-throttle journey for Brooklyn group, Tiny Masters Of Today. Almost overnight, the teenage brother and sister duo went from a few homemade recordings on a MySpace page to collaborating with Karen O and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fred Schneider, and Gibby Haynes. We asked one half of them, Ivan, to give us a rundown on the music that’s been pumping on his iPod. Amongst others, he upped Glen Campbell, Yo La Tengo, and Man Man [listen below]: ‘If I ever get married, I would want Man Man to play at my wedding’, he says. Ok, well, we’ll hold you to that Ivan. Tiny Masters of Today’s new album Skeletons hits the streets in mid-June. After collaborating with Karen O and Kimya Dawson on their debut, Brooklyn teens Ivan and Ada return with a self-produced and written album, recorded in their home with GarageBand, showcasing their unique take on Ramones-channeled New York punk. Wow! I’ve just realised that I’ve never posted the work of Swedish illustrator Kirsten Ulve before. And that’s just wrong. Her work is exceptional, a colourful, textural realm where anything seems possible. I interviewed her once for a magazine I was editing and asked her what, outside of drawing, she did better than anyone else. Her answer? ‘I bake very tasty brownies’. For real! More please.
For some reason it’s rare that you see London in this light. Nightscapes of big cities are usually reserved for New York and Tokyo, for example. Perhaps the comparatively scarce skyscrapers makes the city less photogenic in that respect. So photographer Jason Hawkes’ work is long overdue — he has really brought the city to life, and given it that lick of golden light that a long-exposure is good for.
Designed by Andrea Corson, the Caviars Round Top Ring, is made from sterling silver. The Caviars sparkle like diamonds, sitting upon an organic band. We have it for sale in the Lost At E Minor online store.
If anyone ever asks you to define the word “schadenfreude,” show him or her these pictures of a poor skier hanging from a ski lift with his junk exposed to the alpine chill. If the person viewing the pictures laughs, he or she now understands the particularly useful German term.
