Beci Orpin, a long time friend, is a talented designer-illustrator based in Melbourne. I have been inspired by her work for years. Orpin exhibits her work frequently and runs the children’s clothing label, Tiny Mammoth.

Princess Tina was probably my favourite clothing line. Behind the label was creative powerhouse and magician, Beci Orpin. I call her a magician because I have no idea how she has accomplished all she has in her short time on this earth. Actually, it’s because she’s extremely talented and hard-working. She makes beautifully whimsical, practical art and homewares and has a new baby clothing line called Tiny Mammoth.
In a very serendipitous moment the other day, I walked into the cafe, Picnic, the latest arrival in my Fort Greene, Brooklyn neighborhood. Not only do they serve some of the best coffee I have ever tasted, but the store is a virtual paean to Brooklyn illustrator Claudia Pearson. I can’t wait to snap up her Tribal Alphabet book. Herb Lubalin’s typography looks clichéd and a bit played out if you are catching it right now, until you realize that most of the designers riffing on his letters were born after he died. Lubalin’s typography isn’t subtle. That isn’t to say it isn’t well balanced or poorly kerned (it is). It’s more that it is loud, fearless, and clever in ways type hasn’t been before or since. His particular cues are popping up more and more lately in “cutting-edge” graphic design. Avant-garde indeed.
Micah P. Hinson is like every rustic, broken down, and pieced back together country great that’s ever been. Only hipper and slightly less sombre. This track, Diggin’ A Grave, is a button-up hoe down with a classic pop chorus and a jangly banjo accompaniment. Yup, some folk have all the fun.
Located on a mountain in country outside Mudgee, in New South Wales, Australia, a permanent camp designed by Casey Brown has been set. A timber structure clad in copper has been designed to have a closed state and an open state. From the closed position, the flanks of copper are hoisted and capture views across the valley. With an imagery of structures, materials and mechanics of old, there is something romantic about this foothold on the hill.
A survey of two thousand Britons has revealed the country’s perfect pet. Max is a bizarre hybrid that is part cat, part dog, part rabbit and part horse. Insurance firm More Than, which conducted the research, suggests that Max ‘has high energy levels, loves daily walks and sleeps for an average of nine hours 27 minutes a day’. Read more
