It’s been a while since we last heard the clamorous sound of We Have Band, but for obvious reasons. Having toured extensively in 2009, the London-based trio took the later part of last year to enter the studio with producer Gareth Jones (Grizzly Bear, Interpol, Depeche Mode, These New Puritans). Now, the debut We Have Band album is due to drop in a few days. Read more

Director Daniel Askill is the brains behind These New Puritans’ epic new video, We Want War. The visual elements seamlessly coincide with These New Puritans’ abounding noise, made up of noir synths, banging percussion, puffy bass, and soft vocals. We Want War is the first single from their forthcoming album, Hidden, which will be out January 18.

So here are my picks of acts to watch in 2008 from this year’s SXSW — Jeremy Jay: New K records signing. Sounds like The Microphones meets Buddy Holly; David Banner: political effusive Hip Hop from the heart; Iglu & Hartley: the next buzz band. Schmidt, Hammer and Lassen’s design for the Copenhagen national library is a celebrated structure in the already glittering design portfolio of northern Europe. The marble and glass façade of The Black Diamond (yes, that is what their national library is called) is an example of architectural brilliance, with even the angled walls designed to best mirror the city’s beautiful canals.

Woohoo! Another flash game that actually tests your cognitive abilities. LightBot is a difficult, but satisfying game in which you direct a little robot using a system of simple commands in order to light up various squares on a grid. The first few levels guide you through the seemingly easy process, but when there are multiple sets of directions requiring you to write what are essentially codes, it can get pretty hairy.

It’s pretty bold to release a 25 track double CD as your first album, but singer-songwriter Benji Hughes doesn’t care. Themes of love and heartbreak run though the album and his folk-tinged pop draws comparisons to Beck, The Eels and The Magnetic Fields. [portrait by Vanessa Prager]
