Boasting perhaps the greatest band name on the planet, Scottish four-piece We Were Promised Jetpacks released their debut album, These Four Walls, on Pod Records [Inertia]. Standing alongside the likes of Frightened Rabbit, Glasvegas, and The Twilight Sad as leading figures in Scotland’s indie-rock renaissance, the band’s first full-length was recorded almost entirely live. We checked in with them to get the inside word on the music that inspired it all and they started with The Twilight Sad song, I Became A Prostitute [listen below]: ‘This is the new single by one of the best bands around. It’s pretty perfect. We’ve been lucky enough to see this live three times recently, and each time it’s felt like that footage of the nuclear bomb going off that they love to use on TV. You know when the house gets flattened?’

After weeks of packing Australia’s crate with the best of Aussie nightlife, our crate was farewelled in lavish style at the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange send-off party in Sydney last week. We discovered Australia is swapping with Brazil, so we’re hanging out for the samba and cachaça to sway ashore and lead us astray. I’ve just come across the music of Minneapolis band Cloud Cult, and their song Chemicals Collide in particular. Their sound is a mix of scratchy acoustic guitar riffs mixed in with staccato beats and airy harmonies, all infused with a beautiful sense of lyrical melancholy. Read more

Italian brand Brionvega has resurrected the classy Radiofonografio piece first created in 1965. The updated version is just like the original turntable/radio unit, but also has a CD/DVD player.
Sometime in 2010, the folks behind Dirty Dishes had the slightly silly idea of using cheeky vintage photos and putting them on dinner plates. After doing lots of research, talking to lots of people, and receiving loads of positive feedback, they wondered if this idea was so silly after all. And thus Dirty Dishes was born. Read more
