The True Vine is a great little record shop in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore. Specializing in rare, vintage, and ethnic records and CDs, the store is a great place to just browse for something weird and unexpected rather than a place to search for something specific, which is part of its charm. It’s a also a great place to research local Baltimore music, and their old location on 36th St used to host shows, so I’m sure their new digs on Hickory Ave around the corner will do the same. The store also has a musical electronics department in case you need some repairs on a synthesizer or you’re looking for a good deal on some used equipment.

I’m not sure this is a sustainable idea, but it’s lovely all the same. Submit your favourite word or phrase to the artists at The Phraseology Project and they’ll transform them into a beautiful piece of typography for you to show off.
Sometimes we need an ad to remind us of what’s important. Normal is beautiful. Keep our oceans alive. Vote. Be more fearless. The Whitehouse Post is an international post-production company whose projects are damn fine. In fact, they are the scary mix of wit and aesthetics that makes any message convincing. Attention Asian fetishists: Sanrio is about to open a Hello Kitty theme park in the city of Anji in Zhejiang Province, China. It will be the first of such parks outside of Japan.

If you ever happen to find yourself riding across the mid-west on horseback with an iPod jangling about in your holster, be sure to let Calexico soundtrack the experience. They’re cleverly fusing a range of genres, mixing some good old country with US indie, a bit of jazz and even, in 2003’s Feast of Wire, some smatterings of electronica. Lead singer Joey Burns gives a healthy amount of cowboy twang and the soaring orchestral background and sweet country guitar licks add a real atmosphere to the music.
