You know you’ve made it in Australia when you have a song featured in a BMW commercial. Yup, The Presets have done that, and more. We asked Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes to write about the songs that have helped shape — in some small way — The Presets sound, finessed so superbly on their latest album, Apocalypso. They started with the Stereolab song, Super Falling Star: ‘Stereolab are one of my favourite bands. I love this song especially, it’s so washy and dreamy. Next big things don’t often come as hot as Melbourne band, The Galvatrons. They’re still on the low down, but with a debut album on the way, this band will soon be everywhere. The four-piece rock-synth outfit do glam 80s better than the 80s acts did, with the attire to match. Currently on a small-scale tour of Australia, they’re worth seeing now before the crowds arrive. The Galvatrons have also already played the country’s biggest festivals, and supported Australian rock royalty such as The Presets, The Panics and You Am I.

If I Know You represents one of the more opulent moments from the second album, Apocalypso, by Australian electro duo, The Presets. Built from a somber chord progression and poignant tale of bitterness and lessons learned, If I Know You echoes of lonely night drives, dancing in the forest and the feeling of gallantly marching away from a spiteful lover. To recreate the emotionally resonant atmosphere of the song on film, The Presets enlisted French director Eva Husson (who directed the acclaimed short for M83′s Kim and Jessie last year) to weave a poetic LA dream sequence of fire and dance.
Mark Powell makes amazingly horrific little dioramas that remind me of old Tool videos and certain scenes in Pan’s Labyrinth. The grotesque little creatures in Powell’s world are monstrous versions of ourselves, going about their business eating, defecating, dissecting things, and playing music with their slimy, vein-y appendages, reminding us viewers that we are all just piles of pulsating meat. There’s something quite compelling about the intensity and intimacy in this portrait by Juliana Beasley. The kids seem coiled and ready to spring to action in an environment which is eerily stark and devoid of discernible character.
The issue of abortion has hardly ever been represented so honestly by a movie. Knocked Up and Juno gave the pro-choice movement a boost, and of those two, only Juno came close to confronting the issue. In the Princess of Nebraska, the main character suffers through indecision, naivety and turmoil that seem much closer to reality. Read more
Babycakes is a fantastic vegan bakery and you don’t have to be a crazy vegan to agree. If you’re in New York, you should definitely pay this place a visit. The creations are fluffy, creamy and crusty in all the right places, and the place is CUTE.
We got the inside word from Josh Diamond of New York experimental group, Gang Gang Dance, on the music that is moving him right now and he started off by propping the beautiful Ryuichi Sakamoto track, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence: ‘It’s just an amazing piece of music — serene, austere (in a heavy, beautiful way), emotional, a great mix of electronic sounds, patient, and a wonderful melody, with a quality of yearning for a better place. The frontman for Sydney trailblazers, Paper Scissors, has just dropped his first solo EP under the alias of Pork Pies, and it’s an absolute beaut. Like the Paper Scissors’ more low-key numbers, there’s a real feeling of raw nostalgia running through the record. Jai Pyne’s distinctive vocals linger on your eardrums for a while after they’ve ceased, anchored down by a poignancy and sense of longing.

To be honest, I can’t bring myself to care about the new TSA scanners in airports. It’s not like they can’t already see and know everything about you already. However, I love these garments with the 4th Amendment printed on them in metallic ink so that the text show up clearly on scanners.
