Os Mutantes were formed in Sao Paolo, Brazil, in 1966 by Sergio Dias and his brother Arnaldo, who blended their love of English rock n roll, culled from shortwave radio broadcasts, with American psychedelic in the spirit of Jimi Hendrix and traditional Brazilian music to create an entirely new sound to match an equally turbulent time in Brazilian history. The recent release of their latest album, Haih, marks the band’s first recorded material since 1974 and their first album to receive a worldwide release. We checked in with Sergio and asked him to tell us about the musical influences that inspired the new recording. He started off with the Stravinsky epic, The Firebird [listen below]: ‘It’s just so beautiful. It’s a study of how to develop a melody and pushes the envelope in all directions. I have followed the Clayton Brothers’ work since the mid-90s and had the pleasure of meeting them a few years back. Their art is a reflection of what great people they are. It’s really compelling to see their work in person. I love it and can’t get enough of it. I wish I had a lot more money so I could have a big one in my house.
What better way to get around town than via the relative luxury of a stretch bicycle. And yes, we believe the designer Wouter Mijland is working on incorporating a spa.

Of all the weird places the world has to offer, the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia has to be one of the coolest. Literally. At 3,700m above sea level, it’s the biggest and highest salt flat in the world, where after dark, temperatures can drop to minus 40 degrees celsius. The best way to explore the salt flat is to hire a 4WD and driver from the Uyuni township. En route, you can even stay at a Salt Hotel, where everything is, quite literally, made from salt: the chairs, beds, tables and even the walls. There’s no heating and the beds aren’t exactly ‘plush’, but it’s worth every salty second. Read more
