Ze Frank is back, albeit in more restrained form, with his That Makes Me Think Of series of videos on the Time magazine website. As with The Show, his year-long videoblog which he updated daily between 2006 and 2007, the new series features Frank free-associating between various recent news bites, wrapping it all up in an irreverent way. Still, to get a better taste of the iconic blogger’s true capabilities, check out his recent Hard Times series of videos on YouTube and his website.
I’m a couple days late and a million dollars short at this point, but maybe by this time next year I’ll be the proud owner of this Human Slinky costume. I can dream, can’t I?
Evan Stremke, a graphic designer from Wisconsin, has given us a morbid history lesson. The continuous subject of his marvelous poster series, Invitation To An Assassination, is the forced death of outstanding public figures. The Osama Bin Laden poster is, of course, already in the making. I’m not sure what to think of the subject matter, but I love the artistic execution. Read more
Seldom has black humour been done so well. On the surface, this film about the everyday lives of some unusually mundane characters, sounds extraordinarily boring. But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious. As a child, I took piano exams in over-sized white rooms, on baby grand pianos that felt unfamiliar and echoed strangely as someone across the room observed me in silence. It felt clinical, intimidating and completely devoid of warmth. Last week, I started noticing upright pianos, some painted haphazardly, others respectfully untouched plonked in the most unlikely places throughout Sydney. There was one on the edge of the baby pool at the local swimming pool, with a young girl in a rainbow striped dress tapping out a happy but disjointed melody; another shaded under a tree at the park on the way home. Heavily influenced by music and film, the design team at Conquer Gear showcases their tees not as clothes, but indubitably as limited edition art pieces. That said, I wonder what film or music piece inspired Mr. Owl picture t shirt [below]? Led Zeppelin came to mind, but then so did Joni Mitchell!. As for film inspirations, Clockwork Orange, Lord of the Rings and Out of Africa. Hmmm, maybe I’m not so good at this afterall. Read more
