With his solo project, Black Pus, Lightning Bolt drummer Brian Chippendale continues to pound out muscular, unrelenting, ear-shredding thrash noise. Using pedal-triggered feedback and electronics, harsher vocals, and occasionally a saxophone, the by now iconic Chippendale does not disappoint fans of his earlier work, as the packed crowd at Tarantula Hill in Baltimore proved the other night — even after an hour-long set and an ambulance showing up, people were grinning ear-to-ear, sweaty and panting from crazed dancing.

After getting lost in the quagmire that is the internet, M83’s Digital Shades, first released digitally in 2007, has just been given a space on the shelf in your nearest music shop. Before shooting to acclaim with Saturday=Youth, Anthony Gonzalez looked closer to Krautrock and Eno and produced this ambient sometimes beautiful record. There’s much less of a disco feel than both Saturdays and his first album, Before the Dawn Heals Us. Some might say it’s a bit self-indulgent, not easily accessible, and more of a soundscape than a pop attempt. Yet, like Eno, Gonzalez is slowly becoming a master of the perfect chord sequence, and the result is an interesting, often heart-wrenching, set of compositions. Accessory designer Anne Holm Alexandersen gives new meaning to the concept of Black Swan with her interpretation of a feather collar. The intricate piece is hand-stitched with leather and attached in the back to replicate wings. Pair with pale skin and a tight hair bun for instant ballerina chic.
