On a recent trip to New York I became the proud owner of a kid robot swatch watch designed by Frank Kozik. There are eight artists in this kid robot collection: Tara Mcpherson, Gary Baseman, Joe Ledbetter, Jeremyville, SSUR Ruslan Karablin, Tilt, MAD, and Frank Kozik. With each watch you get your own little dunny, also designed by the artist. With the Frank Kozik watch, you pay a little extra and you get a big dunny with your watch.

If the whimsical name of this company doesn’t ring any bells, I’m pretty sure you’ll recognize some of the artists it houses. Born in Brooklyn earlier this year, this company is a funhouse collective of established artists who each bring a special brand of fun to the table. Artists such as Alex Pardee, Buff Monster, Jeremyville, Miss Van, and Tara McPherson are brought together under one gingerbread roof to make the world a much more wondrously colourful place. The Infectious design community creates cool device skins, adhesive wall art, and car decals, using the talents of artists such as Dalek, Tara McPherson, Shag and Junko Mizuno, among many others. To celebrate their new status as the home for Skate Deck Design Community, Popdeck, they are currently holding a contest to design the first five decks to be added to the Infectious catalog. There’s no theme and first place prize wins a recession-friendly $1000. Sweet. Read more
Giant office supplies add to an office space atmosphere, creating a playground rather then a space for corporate duldrums to wander aimlessly. This was originally created to separate the four sections of a London office so buyers could see each one differently. But I rather see it as a chance to feel as if we shrank. Fun! Read more
I started reading a very funny book over the weekend by the English writer Toby Young called The Sound Of No Hands Clapping. Brilliant. Never has a title been so apt as Young bumbles his way through the fickle Hollywood movie industry. It’s an excellent study in human nature. Oh man, it’s a good thing I’m not living in Tokyo as I’d probably never leave the house. Japanese TV is the best. Want proof? Check out this clip from a prank show called Wake You Up where hapless victims are woken from their slumber in the most … ummm … ruthless of ways.
When you first see The Gershwin Hotel, you might think it’s an art gallery or a public art installation. The white, bird-like shapes sticking out of its red facade is certainly unique, without being too loud. The rooms are rather small but the location and accessible price range makes it all worth it.
