Getting into analog synths can be daunting, with amateur hobbyists often too timid to tinker with the insides of their often expensive and rare instruments. But being able to mess around with a machine’s guts to change the sounds it makes is half the fun of synthesizers, which is why Gakken’s SX-150 Analog Synthesizer kit is so awesome. The entire unit costs around $50 including shipping, and the easy-to-assemble and easy-to-hack design may give some newbie circuit benders confidence to get out their soldering irons and oscilloscopes.

Back in the ’90s, just as the gangsta rap phenomenon was winding down and hip-hop was fragmenting into its own subgenres, Prince Paul and RZA kicked off the short-lived horrorcore fad with their group Gravediggaz. At the time, the melding of dark, gothic themes with hardboiled rap seemed gimmicky and awkward, a strange extension of the early and awful attempts to bridge hip-hop and metal, but on closer listen, the now defunct supergroup was way more innovative than they were given credit for.
