Digital media artist Greta Poulsen’s latest exhibition, Shift, features a compilation of moving images compressed into one still image. The moving images are from the television series, Dragnet 1967. Photoshop compares each frame and combines the result so that anything that is moving in the frame is manipulated, while everything that stays still remains relatively unchanged. Read more

If the words “canned” and “meat” scare you a little, dredging up uncomfortable associations with Spam, we totally understand. But Quebec-based ‘conserverie artisanale’ has dared to show us that the can is cool, and canned meat just as appealing. Read more

WE'RE WATCHING

Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Set in the 1980s, We Own The Night shows a real nostalgia for that period — particularly in the costumes. Read more

WE'RE TRAVELLING TO

Located on West Houston, Alphaville is my favorite gift store in Manhattan. It offers a great selection of vintage objects, from Nixon’s campaign buttons, to Sesame Street 80s mobiles, 50s greeting cards and the original Mr. Potato Head and his friends. It’s one of those places I walk into just to look but always end up buying something.

WE'RE LISTENING TO

Named after the first openly gay politician in US history, Harvey Milk make some rather testosterone-heavy tunes. While appealing mostly to the stoner-rock and indie-metal set, the quintet from Athens, Georgia, aren’t afraid of a little melody, as the almost pop track Motown on their latest album, Life … the Best Game in Town, proves. But more often than not, the band gets down and dirty with some knuckle-dragging sludge rock. Amid the haze of searing guitar squeals, menacing power chords, and seismic bass rumbling, though, are some almost math-rock flourishes that hint at the brains behind the brawn.
