Featuring some of the finest young photographers that Aussie fashion magazine Frankie has run over the years, Pretty in Print is an exhibition of fashion pages and the photographers behind the shoot at Sydney’s MTV Gallery between 6-10pm on August 13. There’ll be music from Fergus, Des Miller, and others, amongst all the wonderful photography from Ezra Patchett, Amanda Austin, Julia Schauenburg [work above], and more. To win a VIP ticket for the event (including a goodie bag, and who doesn’t love a goodie bag!), just leave a message under this post saying why you really, really want to go. Kareena Zerefos is having her first solo show in Sydney at the MTV Gallery opening Tuesday June 3. The exhibition will bring a collection of her recent illustrative work capturing themes of ‘isolation and escapism, through the depiction of children and their imagination’. Read more

Argentinian illustrator Gustavo Aimar’s version of the Deluge is full of light and peace in it’s inherent simplicity and wondrous naivety. Generally speaking, the innocence and playfulness of childhood is never far from the core symbolic theme in Aimar’s works.
This water theatre by the British architect, Sir Nicholas Grimshaw of Grimshaw Architects, takes the form of a vertical seawater greenhouse, with the evaporators and condensers stacked vertically to maximise yield. The structure is not only a visible engine of sustainability but is also a large theatre auditorium. Read more

DJ Spooky — That Subliminal Kid — is just about the deepest crate digger around, trawling the barrels of long-lost record stores for choice vinyl to spin in his wickedly dubby sets. He gave us the inside word last week on his eight favourite songs right now via our sister website, My Secret Playlist. This is what he had to say about Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Panic in Babylon: ‘If there’s anything that the twenty-first century has told us, it’s that dub is the real original hip-hop. There’s a fun range of prints up on the Boo Ware site, a Sydney based t-shirt label that began selling at the legendary Paddington Markets in 2003. You can still find them there every Saturday morning. Their tees are ’soft and comfortable with original, quirky prints’.

Woah, we’ve gotten to the postmodern phase of flash game history where social commentary, appropriation of ironic DIY style, and surrealist absurdity are the order of the day. That said, Jason Nelson’s i made this. you play this. we are enemies. is pretty fun, if you manage to see through the frenetic aesthetic to figure out what’s going on.
Freelance designer Alex Trochut uses typography, illustration and a solid idea to create works that communicate to each brief. He states that he doesn’t want to choose a particular style but instead enjoys ‘expressing himself and communicating though the needs of every project’. And his formula has worked: his clients include The Guardian G2, Nike Football, and my pencil-case favourite, Faber and Faber.
Cape Town-based photographer Jenna Bass takes dynamic, motion filled shots that capture the unique energy and irrepressible spirit of her beautiful hometown.
These stylish hoops of bronze have a profound effect on me. I’m seriously left singing If I Were A Boy Beyonce-style whenever I see them. Made by Stannard Inc, William the Brave bronze rings are stunning and the raw look exudes an air of individuality. But the cool thing is that you can actually get away with wearing them if you’re a chick, too. They’re made uni-sex in various sizes.
