Stranglehold, at Sydney’s First Draft Gallery, is an exhibition of new drawings and screenprints by James Jirat Patradoon, exploring his take on fantasy hyper-masculinity with portraits inspired by slasher movie villains, pro wrestlers, biker gangs, and Elvis. This series examines notions of deferred mascullinities: confused and misdirected rites of passage informed more by cartoons and action heroes than by reality itself. Drawn in a style influenced by the comics and cartoons of his youth, Jirat Patradoon’s images of fist-fights and tough-guy bravado consider the idea of violence as the purest form of masculine statement and its integral place in the male mythos. The exhibition opens on February 4. Read more

The controversial and multifaceted International contemporary art exhibition Trailblazers hits Sydney this month. Boutwell Draper Gallery will grace multimedia works by pioneering Australian, American and European artists from November 19 onwards. I’m thrilled to see groundbreaking pieces by Ben Frost, Kill Pixie, Copyright and Cleon Patterson [above], to name a few. The vast array of paintings, photography, sculpture, installation, video and digital arts is on display until December 13. C’mon, you know you want to culture your soul.

Boston-based artist Corey Corcoran synthesizes neo-primitivist visions out of found materials, fabrics, and a rusty palette of paints and pigments.
I disagree, but the Tights are not pants manifesto is pretty funny. There’s some history and arguments on why tights shouldn’t be worn as pants, and a downloadable kit with printable flyers to spread the word. A commendable effort. Do you agree tights are not pants? I’m all for tights as pants, as long they’re, ahem, worn well.
Whenever I begin to take life too seriously, I head over to Indexed for a little humor treat. Never have math, formulas and graphs been so clever and witty. The creator of the site started it as a way to make fun of some things, sense of others. Somehow her little formula worked. She is now listed in TIME Magazine’s Top Blogs of 2008. And now Jessica Hagy is a published author. Enjoy exploring the inner-workings of her mind. It is simply delightful.

Having lived in New York for over two years now, transplanted from the sunny beachside landscape of Sydney, Australia, I appreciate the gritty realism, yet positiveness and vibrancy in the photographic series on Manhattan locals by British writer and photographer, Ian Woolverton. In addition to his talents with the lense, Woolverton also has two humanitarian awards: one for the Australian Red Cross Service Medal for his achievements in the Bali bomb response and the other, Australian Government’s Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal, for covering the tsunami in Aceh. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
