I’ve been a big fan of illustrator Roman Dirge’s work since I first spotted his comic, Lenore, on the shelves of Sydney’s Kings Comics in 1996. Dirge hails from L.A. but his work is decidedly more devilish than you would expect from the City of Angels. While Lenore tells darkly humorous tales about a little dead girl and her murderous exploits, Dirge gets even blacker in his book Something at the Window is Scratching, a short volume of poems guaranteed to give children nightmares and adults fits of criminally insane laughter. My favourite poem, entitled Boodini and Choobie, is about a ‘rotting magician’ and his ‘decomposing hare’. Every time I read it I giggle like an escaped mental patient, which works well when I want the bus seat all to myself. This year Dirge has a ‘best of’ volume coming out called Taxidermied, as well as a full-length Lenore book entitled Wedgies.
Trevor Mikula is a contemporary artist from Nashville. His work is vibrant and whimsical. I love it so much. I kept noticing his paintings around Nashville and finally had to track him down. Read more
Austin-based photographer William Hundley loves juxtaposing completely absurd and unrelated objects. Whether it’s fabric-draped people in mid jump or chihuahuas and Easter Island heads standing on cheeseburgers, Hundley takes an almost Dadaist joy in making random, giddily puzzling images. Read more

When you first see The Gershwin Hotel, you might think it’s an art gallery or a public art installation. The white, bird-like shapes sticking out of its red facade is certainly unique, without being too loud. The rooms are rather small but the location and accessible price range makes it all worth it.
When I’m rich and famous, I wonder if they’ll start a meme blog of me with white people like this one for Kanye West. I guess that would be my Facebook page. Read more
A culmination of nearly four years of writing and recording, Omaha quintet, The Faint are preparing to release their fifth album, Fasciinatiion, on August 5 on the band’s own newly-formed label, blank.wav. Working without any time constraints, the songs went through many recorded incarnations before finding their final forms. The result is the best album in the band’s career, a record that is the purest culmination of The Faint’s brilliant musical instincts, ideas and aesthetic, with each member contributing equally to its creation.
Carrot Rabbit loves kids, very, very much. They play, sing, karaoke and cook. He’s about to develop CR Land, just for kids. CR are childrens’ best friend, for sure. A special UV ink printing method makes the “raspberry” stain visible on those cute childrens’ faces if they get directed to the sunlight.

Italian brand Brionvega has resurrected the classy Radiofonografio piece first created in 1965. The updated version is just like the original turntable/radio unit, but also has a CD/DVD player.
