I’m a Swedish illustrator based in London. At first glance my work looks sweet and innocent; it’s filled with pastel colours and cute animals. But some of the pieces also have darker themes in them. To the North Pole, for example, tells the story of two sisters’ journey to the Arctic where they meet a grim end in the belly of a polar bear.

Clara Besijelle is a Swedish illustrator. She wonderfully mixes art deco type details, fabric prints, and pompus facial expressions with scruffy colouring in. Her style of drawing works well with her story-telling, which is awkward, sophisticated and hilarious. The comic, Good-bye and Wedding Day, is a perfect introduction to her work.

Jenny Mortsell is a Swedish illustrator who I collaborate with from time to time when she chooses to use my photographs in her own photorealist drawings.

Recently we were simultaneously having an Italo Disco moment and she revealed this song, video and vinyl she had made as a final art school project. Her alter-ego/stage-name is Rozzetta, the ‘hit’ she made, called Fantasy, is so hot in that Molly Ringwald 80’s kinda way: accurate in the details and production of all the materials, from the diffused look of the video, to the design of the record sleeve.

Swedish illustrator Siri Ahmed Backstrom has some very charming techniques up her sleeve. Her work has the feel of a bigger and — dare I say — better version of what your precocious little niece might churn out at the dining room table on a crafty whim. I love her loose, childlike rendering, splashed out in everything from gauche and watercolor to crayon scratch.
