Air travel and sushi are two things we love, but don’t necessarily picture together. So it’s pretty neat that SushiAirways boldly mashes up both. Its interiors are playfully modeled after the Douglas DC-3, an American fixed-wing aircraft that was big in the 1930s, while Jap cuisine is served by staff dressed in matching uniforms reminiscent of cabin crew gear. To board the bar-restaurant in Singapore, customers have to climb a flight of metallic steps like one of these ubiquitous air-stairs. OO STUDIO helmed both design and concept It could have gone so wrong, but thankfully it never descends into bad taste territory.

Sushi? Burritos? If you’re living in California, working through this conundrum is probably engrained into your weekly routine. But thanks to one chef in San Francisco who just didn’t want to have to make that choice, now you don’t have to either. Sushiritto is the ultimate mash-up of burritos and sushi, where Latin flavors mingle with Asian ingredients.

Admittedly, I’m still trying to figure out how it’s not a gigantic, hand rolled sushi but once you read through their menu, it doesn’t really matter what it is – you just want to stuff your face with it. Take, Geisha’s Kiss, made of Yellowfin tuna, tamago, piquillo peppers, yuzu tobiko, lotus chips, cucumber, avocado, green onions, and sesame seeds. And then there’s Lava Nachos, which marries brown rice chips with extra-spicy tuna, pepper jack cheese, guacamole and sriracha aioli. Oh yeah. Their standing-room only, lines out the door location in SoMa necessitated a second opening also in downtown San Francisco. So next time you’re schlepping around SF wondering if it’s sushi or burritos, give Sushiritto a go and have it both ways.

Gold-laced sushi is only appropriate for people whom live large and lavish lifestyles. Made by ambitious Filipino chef Angelito Araneta Jr, our favourite seaweed treat comes wrapped in a thin 24-carat gold leaf and affluently encrusted with .20-carat African diamonds on top. It also comes with a $2700 price tag, making it the world’s most expensive sushi to date. While it can be found in a restaurant in Manila, the chef says his unique fishy roll is often used during courtship and marriage proposals.

Not a fan of sushi? Then check out Sooshi — a new sushi-style treat from New Zealand Natural ice cream. Though it may look a lot like your neighborhood rainbow roll, these sweet snacks are made purely of real fruit and ice cream. Instead of the outside ‘nori’ sheet, Sooshi sports a green apple flavored strip. Rice is replaced with vanilla or fruit ice cream, and rather than vegetables, the center’s filled with lemon, apricot, raspberry, or blackcurrant fruit puree. Though word on the street is that it’s already super sugary, those with a real sweet tooth can top it off with a squirt of chocolate ‘soy sauce’. So next time you’re out for a sushi dinner, consider skipping the California roll and heading straight to dessert.
