Bare concrete, transparency, vibrant colours and curated artworks define the new EMI offices in Surry Hills, Sydney, as the record company makes its move across the Harbour Bridge to Australia’s creative epicentre. Designed by interior design firm, The World is Round, the Hutchinson St space makes an impact, as bold colours contrast with the industrialized shell.

The inclusion of gallery spaces and curated artworks from local artists is an important statement of intent, both in providing inspiration to its staff and in presenting a holistic approach to music and the creative industries. The office opens with an interesting juxtaposition between Stuart Hall’s portrait of Paul Dempsey, entered in this year’s Archibald Prize, and works by street artist Beastman.

Sydney’s favourite rockabilly chef duo, Elvis Abrahanowicz and Ben Milgate, have done it again at Porteño, working their own brand of cool on the old Dimitri’s restaurant on Cleveland Street, Surry Hills — it’s only claim to fame was a sign that sat outside for years saying ‘official wrap party location for Moulin Rouge’. Um, ok.

Abrahanowicz’s Argentinian heritage and the duo’s ballsy style has transformed this sprawling location into hacienda cool, with marble-topped tables, rendered walls and black accents. The crowning glory here is the asador, a South American torture chamber-looking device that’s responsible for the toothsome, smokey, bbq smells that pervade the restaurant.

Order the suckling pig: the head of which is served to the table with a knife through the eye. Other wins include veal sweetbreads – sticky, salty and tender pieces of goodness – and fried Brussels sprouts that are caramel golden on the outside, with a nutty texture that dares you to rethink everything you know about this largely misunderstood vegetable. Wash it all down with a jug of sangria or a Spanish apple cider.

Eating agedashi tofu and sushi while live jazz music plays is a pleasure of mine made possible by the very unique Jazushi restaurant in Sydney’s Surry Hills. The hidden gem specialises in traditional Japanese cuisine fused with European influence.

Think actual mushrooms in your miso soup; grilled eggplant steak with tomato miso and cheese; camembert tempura; teriyaki chicken served on a bed of roast potatoes; and fish garnished with balsamic soy sauce. Above all, the delicious tapas-style menu is designed for sharing among friends so you can taste an assortment of morsels. The sweet choya plum wine, sesame ice-cream and wonderful service made an impression on my stomach and left me smiling. I will definitely be returning to this hip jazz headquarter.

Nestled inside the foodie enclave of trendy Surry Hills is the not-so-secret, but nonetheless extraordinary, local gem, Bourke Street Bakery. Inside this artisanal shop, organic pastries and savoury foods are brilliantly united within the bakery’s tiny walls. Here, dedicated Sydneysiders brave impressive queues for exquisite breads, divine tarts, muffins, pastries, and knock-out sandwiches, sausage rolls, and other satisfying delights. [read about more Aussie places at The Colour]

While Bourke Street Bakery’s chilled-out community vibe may give the appearance of non-chalantness, rest assured the owners — bread maker Paul Allen and pastry chef extraordinaire David McGuinness — are committed to sourcing quality, mostly organic, ingredients that they and their team diligently work into the beautiful treats that have earned them so many fans.

And if you can’t make it to Surry Hills — or even if you can — Allen and McGuinness luckily published a cookbook last year filled with simple recipes for their delicious and addictive creations, workable for even the most novice baker.
