We don’t know how, but somehow, somewhere in New York’s subway system, a secret City Hall subway station lurks. With its tall ceilings and brass fixtures, it looks positively majestic and grand. The station has been closed to the public since 1945 as it was deemed too unsafe for use, but apparently, commuters in the know can see the station without getting off on the 6 Train.

There is nothing worse than kicking off your day crammed on public transport with a sneezing-mess to your left and someone’s armpit to your right. Not to mention the impossible task of getting in a thorough map consultation. But what if that armpit was fully lined, with all the necessary location details you could need at one handy eye-level!

Kingston students, Rachel Singer and Oliver St John did the math and came up with the perfectly positioned armpit map, stitched to the threads of a coat to help their fellow travelers in need.

New Yorker’s deserve a rat free subway, don’t you think? This website is organized around a petition for better subway hygiene, which will ultimately mean less rats. There are fantastically disgusting videos and photos that angry citizens have submitted to make their point. The photo gallery even comes complete with grossness ratings. Go on. Get involved.

Which is why these rather sulky Tube Rant tote bags against annoying human behavior on the tube are great for helping anyone deal with their moments of infuriation from ‘elbow space war’ to blatant reading of newspapers ‘over my sodding shoulder’. As the bio of the London-based creator behind the self-named label goes, ‘Rather than punching people in the face, Mardy Mabel decided to channel her rage and rancour into craft so that others could share her rants with friends, enemies and fellow public transport users.’ Good stuff.

In Stockholm, Sweden, metro stations are decorated like big, underground art museums. The colorful painted ceilings are a stark contrast from American subways, which aren’t exactly the most pleasant places to be. Within the Stockholm subway systems, you can find large art installations and painted murals all throughout the cave-like tunnels. Now you have a reason to want to take the subway.

Graffiti and skate culture has become more polished and is trending away from its roots. Philadelphian photographer, Christian Suchecki, brings back a grittier and darker edge to this aesthetic in his series, The Tunnels. Suchecki explores the dimly lit and overly graffiti scripted subway tunnels of North Philadelphia.

The shots are comprised of digital, 35mm, and large format 4×5 film. More impressive is that the artist managed to not only get the large format camera into the underground system, but also maintain excellent quality shots. I’m not usually a sucker for photo, but Suchecki’s style cannot go unappreciated.

These ‘manner posters’ appeared in Tokyo subways between 1976 and 1982, informing passengers on subway etiquette and good manners. We’re not sure why it didn’t catch on elsewhere — a colourful and entertaining poster versus a crackly intercom message from a bored driver? Hmm. The posters were published in a book, Manner Poster 100′, printed in 1983 by Teito Rapid Transit Authority.
