I never use this term but Beyond Ballet Russes, the English National Ballet’s show in honour of Sergei Diaghilev’s legacy, was truly mesmerizing. I watched Programme 1 at the National Opera earlier this year and my enthusiasm is focused on ENB’s versions of the legendary choreographies, L’après-midi d’un faune, and The Rite of Spring by Vaslav Nijinsky. Beautiful and in-depth reworkings of these old and controversial works, the latter one accompanied by Stravisky’s breathtaking score.
