Built in 1969, the Spiegel Publishing House in Hamburg is one of the most remarkable interiors you’ll ever see. Designed by Verner Panton, the building includes a courtyard, lobby, canteen, bar areas, and a stunning looking swimming pool [above] in the basement, among other distinct additions: ‘All designs were his own — lamps, textiles and wall claddings, only the furniture had to be ordered from Knoll International according to his contracts. The specially designed mirror lighting used on walls and ceilings was of major importance. While the swimming pool area was destroyed soon afterwards by a fire and the entry and lobby saw major redesign in the 90s, the canteen has so far remained in the original version and today represents a unique and valuable historic document’. I love this image by Rhea Garen because of the mix of reality and fantasy. The scene of a small cottage-like house in the woods immediately brings me back to some of my favorite childhood stories, like Hansel and Gretel or Sleeping Beauty. I feel like this could have been the woodcutter’s home, or the hide-out where Sleeping Beauty was taken by the three fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merriweather. There is a certain whimsy yet depth, candor yet mystery, all present in this one shot.

Is the soul colored or is it black and white? I find this quite confusing, since I believe that a colored soul is necessary for producing colored things. But then again, I’m sure that true color often comes from the deepest broken, damaged and divided black of one’s soul. Digital Jacklight is a mission to try and find out.
So much of the Baltimore scene seems geared towards day-glo-clad party people, so it’s nice that introspective, country-tinged folk is also well represented here in the form of Noble Lake, a Wye Oak-related project fronted by James Sarsgaard, who I hope won’t mind me calling the second coming of Townes Van Zandt.
