Smith’s intention is for the photos to show the relationship between the everyday and the banal. It’s a success.

Blame it on the picture that came with it, showing a malevolent-looking 1,250-mile wide behemoth hurricane on Saturn taken by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft.

It’s 20 times larger than the average hurricane eye on Earth, and spins four times faster. Sure, it’s a false-color picture, but Plait’s wisecrack in the picture caption (‘Looks like Saturn stayed up a bit too late last night’) still seems like an massive understatement.

Ebay is a strange, strange place — it essentially hosts a bunch of stuff that people have and want to get rid of. Recently I’ve become quite fascinated with looking at its listings of space toys from before 1970. These are future-themed toys from the past, so it makes so much sense to actually see these in the present.

And yet I can’t imagine any actual kids from today actually playing with any of these toys. Maybe just overgrown adult-sized kids. Here are some of the toys: they are odd and funky all at once.

Ground control to Major Tom… but first, you need a space helmet. Etsy seller Jenn Mann has created a LED-lined acrylic space helmet that lights up in 16 different colors. The visor opens up and closes all the way to the back if you ever feel the urge to make direct contact with aliens or Earthlings. The estimated wait, if you place an order, is 4-6 weeks. Could potentially be useful.

It shows the location of 119,617 nearby stars. Zooming in reveals 87 individually identified stars and our solar system. So fascinating, I was there ‘travelling’ for a long time.

The post 100,000 Stars: travel through space on Google Chrome appeared first on Lost At E Minor: For creative people.

This is by far the coolest bookshelf that I’ve ever seen. Machine Project has found a way to solve the problem of having furniture invade too much space by making it retract in to the ground. Aside from the cool aesthetics and fun factor of being able to pull your bookshelves up and down at will, this thought process can be reapplied to many items that take up too much unnecessary space. Foldable dishwashers, anyone?

If you’ve ever dreamed of being an astronaut or flying into the sunset (literally), we may have found the product for you. US surplus space suits are for sale, but unfortunately we’re a couple of decades too late, evident by the fact that postage in this ad costs just 75c. With 8 zippers, inside pockets, and at a weight of 7 pounds, we think the suit is quite a steal for just $7.95. Apparently originally costing $180 a piece, we’re a little concerned about the genuineness of the sentence “absolutely brand new”. Mmmm, astronaut sweat.
