Our friends at the Sydney-based indie club night Purple Sneakers are co-presenting a party with Lost At E Minor at The Abercrombie Hotel in Surry Hills on Friday 14th March. As well as being a damn good excuse to drink, converse, and make some serious, serious noise (Jai from The Paper Scissors will be DJ-ing), the night will also serve as the launch of the Purple Sneakers Social Snaps exhibition featuring candid pics from some of Sydney’s liveliest events. There will also be a graff artist doing a live art performance. It should be fun and just to make it even more so, we’re giving fifteen of our readers a chance to attend the party (each with a plus one). So if you’d like to come along, leave a message under this post saying ‘hell yeah!’, or words to that effect, and we’ll select fifteen of the most enthusiastic responses to be a part of the night. If you stop by Athens, Geogia’s Daily Co-op, you just might find David Mack at the register working on some drawings or comics. But chances are that he’ll be doing some other task, like placing fruit orders or maintaining the merchandise shelves. He always stays busy and has a new website to prove it.

The frontman for Sydney trailblazers, Paper Scissors, has just dropped his first solo EP under the alias of Pork Pies, and it’s an absolute beaut. Like the Paper Scissors’ more low-key numbers, there’s a real feeling of raw nostalgia running through the record. Jai Pyne’s distinctive vocals linger on your eardrums for a while after they’ve ceased, anchored down by a poignancy and sense of longing.

I’m so digging the work of Santa Monica artist Andrew Hem. Painting seems to have become relegated in the illustration world these days, so I’m pleased to see Hem rocking it in a big way. His bold brushwork, lush colors, puppet-like figures and painted type make for a body of work that really hits the painted spot.

If animated wall drawings of severed heads and insect men ejecting their brains from their craniums is what people produce when they have too much time on their hands, then we should do their laundry for them and cook them dinner so they’ll have even more time on their hands.

Instead of spending another Saturday afternoon looking though an already plumaged St Vinnies or Beacon’s Closet before buying something you’ll never wear for $5, check out Mooka Kinney. Read more

The uber-hip French producer M83 has compiled a Secret Playlist for us in which he props Brian Eno, Julee Cruise, and Tears For Fears’ Head Over Heels: ‘This song was the biggest influence for my new album. Our track, Kim and Jesse, takes a lot of inspiration from 80s bands like Tears for Fears. This is one of my favourites’. Read the rest of M83’s Secret Playlist.

Celebrity PunchOut
