Now this is what we call a smart idea: the SmartWallit is an anti-lost accessory that connects with any smartphone with Bluetooth 4.0 or BLE (think iPhone 4s, iPhone 5 or Android). All you have to do is strap on the super-thin anti-lost device to any object you like — such as your wallet — and when it strays beyond the preset threshold (the default distance-warning is 10 meters or 30 feet) of your smartphone, your phone will alert you by ringing and vibrating to signal that you have wandered off and left your belonging behind.

It also comes in handy when you know you have been scatterbrained: you can use the app on your smartphone to make the anti-lost device ring at a volume of over 85dB, as well as view the distance between your phone and the object. Now, now, all we have is one question: what happens if we want to use it on our phone?

We’ve seen an iPhone case that gives your phone an E-ink screen on the back, but what about an E-ink smartphone? This device could cost as much as a ‘dumbphone’, but with all the capabilities of a 3G smartphone. There are definite pros to this gadget; one being price and the other being battery life. The E-ink smartphone would be much easier to read in the sunlight, too. The device might even be available by as soon as the end of this year.

Who amongst you is still shooting analog photos or have heaps of film lying around at home? The Lomography Society has invented the Smartphone Film Scanner to scan, edit, print and share all 35mm films. It fits into any rucksack and comes with a specific smartphone app to edit the photos on the go. That sounds like a must-have tool for analog junkies who enjoy living in the 21st century.

University of Newcastle researchers have developed an innovative app for smart phones and tablets that can transport people back to 19th Century Newcastle at the flick of a finger. The ‘Layar Reality App’ uses smart technology, enabling visitors and history buffs to roam the city streets, point their mobile device at a building or site, and be given a window into the Victorian era.

University of Newcastle School of Architecture researchers Dr. Tessa Morrison, Nicholas Foulcher and Dr. Helen Giggins are using smart phone applications – Layar and WhatWas There – to bring users an augmented reality functionality to display digital “layers” of text and images on an interactive map. The architecture of a forgotten era is then brought to life. By downloading the free Layar Reality application on a smart phone or tablet device, users simply scan the images and hit streets, viewing pictures and reading the history at the 25 designated sites. Here’s an explanatory video, capturing researchers and developers Dr. Tessa Morrison; Nicolas Foulcher taking the Layar app on its maiden test run.
