Skateboarding in slow mo through India

Low Lai Chow Contributor

By Low Lai Chow in Video on Wednesday 15 May 2013

Kilian Martin totally killed it in this video directed by Brett Novak, and now he’s back with another Novak-directed short film of him skateboarding in slo mo through India. It’s sick and beautiful at the same time, especially when it’s so well-aided by the Other Lives tune ‘Take Us Alive’.

São Paulo photographer and artist Flávio Samelo

Didu Losso Contributor

By Didu Losso in New Photography on Thursday 24 January 2013

Since 1992, Flavio Samelo has walked through the streets of São Paulo photographing skateboarders, which allowed him to introduce to his own artwork graffiti, pixação, and other urban elements. Today, the works of Samelo have two fronts: the photographic output, an image with a circulation of one print, creating an indisputable original, and his works that mix his concrete studies with the urban images. Using photography as a base for the paintings allows Samelo to push the limits of his images through the use of shape, line, and color, and to communicate a new graphic reality.

Firefly: an amazing skate video

James Crawley Reader Find

By James Crawley in Video on Friday 4 January 2013

No… not the Joss Whedon masterpiece but a pretty amazing skate video all the same, shot using a camera mounted on a motion stabilised helicopter drone. We used one of these for a shoot and they’re super fun. There’s an amazing shot at about 1:00 into the piece where you really get a sense for [...]

The Suicide Of Western Culture Reader Find

By The Suicide Of Western Culture in Video on Thursday 13 December 2012

Juan Rayos specializes in filming skate videos. He’s become more famous thanks to his Chicas at Longboard videos. The videos show two jugglers together – on one hand, Kilian Martin dancing with the board as an extension of his own body, and on the other, Rayos always following the action very closely. Dope! It’s not [...]

Mind boggling skateboarding video of Kilian Martin

George Hambov Reader Find

By George Hambov in Video on Wednesday 29 August 2012

I came across Kilian Martin’s skating prowess a couple of years ago and this video makes the mind boggle. Skateboarding in my youth and defining my own rules and tricks made me a visual artist today. Kilian’s riding is far better than most skater’s dry technical ability. Even within skating he is arguably creating his [...]

New photography by Scott Pommier

Armin Adams Reader Find

By Armin Adams in New Photography on Wednesday 8 August 2012

Long before I moved to America, I dreamed about travelling the great spaces you see in the photos of Scott Pommier. Before he started taking shots of the Great Wide Open, guys on motorcycles, and campaigns for Chrysler and Harley Davidson, he was a skateboard photographer for many years, shooting pieces of art rather than the usual super-wide angle stuff that bores the shit out of anybody.

By Amos Oaks in Video on Thursday 26 July 2012

Skateboarding is a beautiful form of expression and existence. It truly is a way of life. You fall, you get back up, then you fall again until you succeed. That’s the beauty of it. Russell Houghten is a prime example of skate documentation. His pieces capture the essence of that exhilarating daily experience.

Video of Ray Barbee skateboarding

Sam Crocket Reader Find

By Sam Crocket in Video on Tuesday 10 July 2012

This video makes me very happy. People talk a lot about how skating can be ‘art’ but too often it descends into competitive jock-like bravado. Ray Barbee has something else going on. His skating is creative and infectious. This video captures a lot of what makes skateboarding important to me.

The Skartorialist: a skater blog devoted to skater boys

Rani Nugraha Reader Find

By Rani Nugraha in Cool Websites on Friday 25 May 2012

Somewhere not that deep inside of me, there’s a fifteen year old girl who loves Blink 182, Airwalk treads and a guy called Bernard who hung out with his cargos around the plump rounds of his backside at the half-pipe around the corner from the footy field. In fact, that girl is now sitting in front of her Macbook with huge puppy eyes and swooning all the way back to 1997 with a new blog called The Skartorialist: The Sartorialist equivalent of skater boys from around the globe. The creation of London-based commercial and editorial photographer, Sam Ashley, it should also be known as ‘Painfully cute and perve-worthy lads around the world holding decks’.

Photos of skateboarding in New York in 1960

Zolton Contributor

By Zolton in New Photography on Thursday 1 March 2012

Having spent five years living in New York, I can attest from first hand perspective that the city has a definite mysticism that just translates so well to film. These old school shots of kids cruising the streets on old school skateboards remind me of how little has actually changed in the city over the 53 years since the photos were taken by Bill Eppridge for LIFE magazine.

Nini Baseema Contributor

By Nini Baseema in New Trends on Tuesday 31 January 2012

Breakdance and skateboarding are from yesteryear: Hockern is the new trend sport on the streets these days. The origins of Hockern can be traced back to the German coast city of Kiel, where people with too much time on their hands and not much interest in breaking their bones invented a few tricks that have [...]
