If Dos Equis had a commercial for the most interesting Singaporean photographer alive, this would be John Clang. He’s one of those artists who continues to evolve. I love the way he thinks. He’s very cognisant of the surface plane and shapes that are discovered within the photograph’s composition. And he’s also one of the warmest people you’ll want to meet. Bonus.

The concept is intriguing. LeVeL33 is, after all, self-proclaimed as the “world’s highest urban craft-brewery.” The sweeping views of Singapore’s Marina Bay aren’t too shabby either. But it is the beer that we’re after. Here they freshly brew their own series of blond lager, pale ale, stout and porter.

All are housed in contemporary copper kettles that dominate the center of this penthouse restaurant-cum-craft-beer-bar. If you’re looking to pair your pint with something from the kitchen, LeVeL33 boasts a beer menu with dishes matched to their brews, like braised short ribs dusted with Moroccan spices.

Now, we’ve never been to LeVeL33 so we can’t comment on the food or the drinks, both of which have a somewhat tumultuous existence in the online review space. But with views as spectacular as this and a concept that intrigues – especially in Singapore – LeVeL33 is definitely on our to-do list (even if it doesn’t have wasabi martinis a la our favorite rooftop bar…).

This Chinese cemetery is the only one of its kind in Singapore. Located in the heart of a thriving restaurant and bar culture, these uniformly placed graves are a stark contrast to the residential flats surrounding them. There are 3000 in total, all perfectly placed and tended to. Only 12 are true burials while the rest are all urn burials. This strange phenomenon came about when the government needed to relocate the 3000 urns, which explains the planned, tidy look of the graveyard.

Even starving artists must hold to a code of ethics. Certain professions such as lawyer or doctor require that someone working in that field follow a strict code. But you didn’t know that starving artists have codes, did you? Well, they do. And let me say, the code is beautifully designed and illustrated. The code came about when a group of 46 students in Singapore put their heads together and created the manifesto. It’s complete with a set of Ten Commandments and a place for other artists to sign the document.

The catch: they are altered in a way that makes them somewhat challenging to sit on.
Designed by Singapore’s architectural darlings WOHA, the Parkroyal on Pickering hotel in Singapore packs a maddening 15,000 square metres of gardens, waterfalls and vertical green walls into its premises. Seems legit, then, that it is hailed as a ‘hotel in a garden’. The endless cascading tiers are inspired by Bali’s rice terraces, while, within the hotel’s eco-luxe confines, everything adds up to form a rather impressive sum of the total: marble walls that appear to flow like water, plucky birdcage-shaped cabanas that overlook the infinity pool and playful shadows cast by trees silhouetted against mood lights at night.

Let’s not forget the green measures in place too — that includes harvesting rain, harnessing solar power and making good use of sensors to conserve both energy and water.

A soot black shophouse basking in the sun just looks glorious. Especially when it also has an open black and white wooden porch smack in front of it. That’s how I found myself lured into Artistry, a cafe-bar-restaurant, part art space in Singapore that recently set up base at the first floor of said shophouse. According to co-owner Prashant Somosundram, the porch, massive communal table and stools were upcycled and custom-built with wood salvaged from replica kampong huts that were torn down in Geylang Serai’s Malay Village. The textures are great.

Part of the IEX Asian Heritage collection (a range of fashion and lifestyle collectibles by designers and artists inspired by artefacts from Singapore’s Asian Civilisations Museum), the Impression series of raku clay bowls and plates go beyond the Song Dynasty Yaozhou bowl that inspired them. They are also touchingly ergonomic, with slight dents at the spots where the thumbs go. By Mindflyer/Michael Ng and handcrafted by Steven Low.
