We’re digging the Cupidity video shorts from Cornetto which explore the theme of teen love from a number of different perspectives and locations. These atmospheric films were shot in cinematic style (Quentin Tarantino, eat your heart out!) in the urban meccas of Hong Kong (Margot), Los Angeles (X Phobia), Istanbul (Beauty and the Geek) and New York (Brooklyn’s famous Kismet Diner). In keeping with the teen-theme, the stars of the videos are up-and-coming teen actors, with one of the videos, the wonderful X Phobia, being written by an aspiring teen writer. Yes, yes, we agree, teens are taking over the world. And we have this clever Cornetto video series to prove it! [This post is sponsored by Cornetto]

Since this was my first year not living with my parents, I was worried that my winter visit home to Washington would leave me unfulfilled and nostalgic for the old days. Thankfully, my Christmas break was quite the opposite from the sad one that’s portrayed in my new film, No More Waiting. To make this film, I was working as a one-man-crew, shooting with two of my best friends in my favorite state in the US.

But having worked alongside Reuben, his enthusiasm for the moving image is infectious. Big Hair is a performance piece where spoken word, space and colour are explored. Two special agent supermodels are trapped in the virtuous reality of a shampoo commercial. Philosophy may be their only escape. Big Hair refers to ex UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s hair. Following the change of values in British politics during the 1980′s, what does it mean to be ‘good’?

When was the last time you sent a paper airplane love letter to a complete stranger? Well, maybe you should take a hint from Paperman and try it out. It seemed to work for him. Paperman is a short film that came about when director John Kahrs began to wonder if his interactions with strangers on a public train could ever amount to anything more. The short was executed using a gorgeous animation style that fuses hand-drawn illustration with top of-the-line computer animation.

‘Success is striking a balance between art and commerce’. This is the line that starts Riley Blakeway’s debut film, Thom: A Portrait of Modern Youth, a fitting line considering the subject matter. Thom is a teenager from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, who works as a concreter and enjoys surfing and skateboarding. For Thom (and so many other young Australians), work is a means to an end – a place that is hated but provides money. Blakeway provides a real look into the underlying ideology and attitude of Thom; a dark and futile view at times.

The orignal idea with Brave New Old was to employ a mechanical storytelling element to the work, almost like a toy theatre. In the follow up, I decided to try extending this literally by placing all the characters in a giant machine that would tell the story. I also wanted to work directly with a musician from the start and cut the film to their track. So I worked with Brendan Hogan and our collaboration here has lead to a much larger project altogether.
