The first section of the High Line in New York’s Meat Packing district opened last week. Go check out the beautiful gardens atop of amazing architecture by Frank Gehry [The IAC Building], Polshek Partnership [The NY Standard Hotel], Shigeru Ban [Metal Shutter Houses] and other notable architects. Designed by James Corner Field Operations, with Diller Scofidio + Renfro, highlights of the elevated garden walkway include moveable deckchairs on the old railroad tracks, a water feature to cool your hot feet, and a glass viewing window that is like a futuristic TV screen looking down on the traffic below. Due for completion this year, the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France is an elegant and audacious structure. The design features a transparent polytetrafluoroethylene roofing membrane, stretched over a hexagonal lattice, thats form is derived from a ‘muak kui’ (traditional Chinese woven hat). The Centre, which is to be used predominantly as a gallery, will have both adaptable spatial and lighting options, which enhances the notion of flexibility both within the aesthetics of the building and within its function. On The Museum of Me, you can create and explore a visual archive of your social life. This is a pretty amazing website. If you’re on Facebook, you have to give this a go. It will definitely bring a smile to your face.
Seldom has black humour been done so well. On the surface, this film about the everyday lives of some unusually mundane characters, sounds extraordinarily boring. But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious. There’s something quite captivating about the muted tones and soft textures of Anna Fraser’s photographs. The Australian designer has a very precise sense of framing, which is reflected in the slightly insidery, but beautifully balanced perspective that her work provides on places and scenery that only few people ever get to experience. By her own admission, Fraser ‘prefers things that are not usually very fashionable. Like beige, lots of beige and maybe a bit of taupe’. We think she might be onto something. Read more

When you first hear William Elliot Whitmore’s voice, it’s hard to believe he isn’t a grizzled old man. The baritone-voiced one-man-band does rousing bar room ballads on the banjo and guitar that are sure to send shivers down your spine. On closer listen, Whitmore’s voice does seem slightly affected. But like Tom Waits before him, his voice is likely to age like a good scotch.
