Built inside an old warehouse, Wynwood has a sleek, minimalist look that provides a perfect backdrop for the art on display. An 11-foot-high sculpture of a rainbow-hued man greets guests upon entry, and murals by Shepard Fairey — better known for creating that iconic HOPE poster featuring Barack Obama — adorn the walls.

The art extends from the restaurant out front to the kitchen in the back, where Chef Marco Ferraro creates his own sausages of pork, beef, lamb and veal. Not a fan of meat? Try the equally delicious cilantro-laced seafood ceviche, or the delicate roasted beet and walnut salad. Or just go for a drink – with 40 beers and 70 bottles of wine to choose from, you won’t be disappointed.

From straightforward and colorful, to complex and ominous, 1800 Tequila’s bottles are sporting a new look — for a limited time, at least. The recently released creative, vibrant illustrations adorning the glass bottles are part of 1800 Tequila’s second annual Essential Artists collection. Inspired by art and the want to support emerging talent, this now yearly contest challenges users to create designs for the company’s tequila-filled bottles.

From 15,000 submissions, eleven proposals from talented artists and graphic designers from New York to Hawaii were selected. Their original artwork is a mix of artistic emotions and themes, but all are innovative and unique. In addition to the eleven artists there is also a ‘celebrity’ design courtesy of Studio Number One — Shepard Fairey’s creative agency — which is bursting with a rising group of star designers. And though the contest is over, if you think you can do better than the twelve showcased talents, give it a go by designing your own masterpiece bottle directly on 1800 Tequila’s website.

Pieces range from fashion to installation, and most refer back to Obama’s likeness. This will be a great book to look back on many years from now. And it’s a guilt free purchase, as all of the authors’ proceeds will be donated to Americans for the Arts charity.
He’s the inventor of the mash-up, but his skills go way beyond that. I love to DJ, but when i do, I play a lot of classics. I don’t stick to new stuff because I’m not trying to pull out the top forty banger for the club. That’s what I like about the way Z-Trip plays. He actually inspired me to start DJ-ing in the first place. He mixes hip-hop with classic rock, eighties, and all sorts of weird stuff you wouldn’t think would go together. He’ll have people dancing to Deep Purple, for instance, who would never usually listen to a Deep Purple record. It’s a real skill to be able to entertain and educate at the same time. That’s what I try and do with my art, and that’s what I enjoy about DJ Z-Trip: that ability to slip the cool, lesser known songs in there, which works because of the inertia of the stuff people do know. He understands how to navigate that balance.

But in terms of new people, I particularly love the work of Brooklyn artist Judith Supine. It’s a surreal combination of old engraving art mixed with hand-drawn and painted images. He does paste up posters, but they’re not just square, they’re cut-out shapes of these interesting looking characters. The closest thing I could compare it to are the Monty Python animations.
