Wet Hair is a pleasant ambient drone outfit from Iowa City that’s quite different from frontman Shawn Reed’s noisier and more manic project Raccoo-oo-oon. While relatively unassuming and relaxed, the duo creates some pretty interesting textures using tapes, synth, organ, drums, and vocals, each musical idea puttering along like homemade robots designed for simple and specific tasks. Though they sometimes veer off into abstract and disharmonious territory, they’re never excessively dark or abrasive, and they are also capable of rocking out.

Boy, these are a long way removed from the baby blue quilts that adorned my childhood bed. I blame it on WOW, or The Simpsons, or on whatever other modern cultural phenomenon has de-sensitized us to the brilliant crassness and somewhat blunt messaging on these fun cotton creations by Quiltsrÿche. Ten Masked Men are a British parody band that does death metal covers of famous pop songs by Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and many others. One of my favorites is their cover of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me a River’. It’s epic.
