French artist Jérémy Laffon wants to stick gum to your new shoes. So he built a gallery floor made of gum. And he wants to build insanely huge gum towers. So he put thousands of sticks of gum together then applied heat. These fragile leaning towers of distaster are structurally unsound due to Laffon’s carefully chosen heat gun application points. He built spearmint perfection, then ruined it just enough to make the little metropolis feel alive.

This is how he sums up his building process: “In my mind they are always mash-ups of influences and ideas. I see a castle, a fishing village, a modernist sculpture, a stage set for the Oscars all at once. When they are successful they don’t feel contained or finished. They become organic machines that might grow and expand. I am always adding just one more bit and if time allowed I wouldn’t stop.”

Just so happens that artist Nathalie Miebach was taking astronomy classes at Harvard and learning to weave baskets at the same time when it occurred to her that she could basically weave baskets to interpret data in a three-dimensional space. Since then, she’s translated all sorts of scientific data from astronomy, ecology and meteorology — think barometric pressure, weather patterns and temperature variations — into peculiar-looking basket sculptures.
