I love the subtle colours and sense of quiet introspection in the photographic work of San Francisco-based Elena Kulikova. Her portraits, in particular, capture moments when you sense a little secret has been whispered, but only a few ears have caught it. New York-based, Australian art director Deanne Cheuk — an occasional contributor to Lost At E Minor — is one of the most adventurous and creative designers around. Her work on Tokion magazine, in particular, for which she shaped the visual direction over several years, was inspiring, pushing the boundaries by incorporating illustration, offbeat color touches and avoiding the straight portrait shots which seem to dominate the front window of every inner-city newsagency.
If your house was burning down, but you had time to grab only your most important possessions, what would you take? The Burning House asks this question to a range of people, revealing each person’s priorities and values.
Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Hotel Minimal, is a pop-up one-room hotel from the Linie project that explores the concept of public and private space. Anyone who thinks black metal is too rigid and narrow a genre to have room for innovation would do well to check out Lifelover, a Swedish band that defies every convention of black metal while still remaining miraculously kvlt. The sextet wafts between languid, hallucinatory grooves that channel Iggy Pop and latter-day Cure to unhinged freak-outs that sound as if they’re emanating from the deepest, coldest forests of Norway.

Inspired by the unique digital clock apps created by the designer, Sean Zoega, the i-toc watch is a colorful physical manifestation of digital ideas featuring bespoke two-disc Japan quartz movement. The outer gradient displays the minutes while the inner gradient shows the hours. The rings interact, creating an ever-changing pattern of design and colour.
