The Frogs were a band formed in 1980 by brothers Jimmy and Dennis Flemion who wrote catchy pop tunes about race, religion, and homoeroticism. My favorite album, It’s Only Right And Natural, was released on Homestead records in 1989 and was extremely controversial because of the subject matter. The band was championed by Kurt Cobain, Billy Corgan and Beck, who sampled the song I Don’t Care If U Disrespect Me (Just So You Love Me) on his hit Where It’s At.

I heard about Hubble, Ben Greenberg (ex member of Z’s), through friends, and was always curious but somehow never caught him live. I was finally lucky enough to witness Hubble in the flesh a few weeks back at the very unfortunate closing of Zebulon, one of my favorite clubs. I was mesmerized by Greenberg’s set. His finger tapping style of playing guitar, with such a sick tone, had me totally transfixed. It’s hard to fathom his technical prowess but he uses his skill so adeptly you lose yourself in the sound of it all.

In 2007, the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin reunited for a one off performance, joined on drums by the original drummer’s son – a young boy at the time of his father’s death, which ended the band in 1980. Recently released as Celebration Day, this document captures of rock ‘n’ roll at it’s finest. These guys prove they can still swagger big time.

This Cambridgeshire band are attracting attention of late, and rightly so. From the gut vocals, with an eerie intensity, push through wave after wave of melodic guitar riffs. This is an honest rock band making the music they want to make that will defy any snobbery you may hold against a genre of music which isn’t exactly at the height of the art-pop/indie/chamber-folk fashion. You’ll be humming Backroads for weeks after the first listen.

The Tielman Brothers were an amazing early rock n roll band who pioneered a style of music called ‘Indorock’ – big in Holland and Germany in the early 60’s and made by displaced Dutch-Indonesian kids. Lead guitarist Andy Tielman played like Hendrix, Dick Dale and Scotty Moore before those guys existed. He passed away in November.

I caught this band by accident when I stumbled into the Crossroads Tent late one night at Secret Garden Party this year. I was blown away – not my usual cuppa tea but they were everything you want in a live performance. Pure, undiluted old-style rock n’roll but turned up to 11. Frenzied, fast and loud, all quiff and swagger with some mean piano, this band have a new album fresh out and are making some serious waves.

I was really attracted to Rose Eken’s sculptures at Art Copenhagen Art Fair. Eken (re)constructs scenarios borrowed from rock music and culture. But rather than creating faithful copies, her works play with scale and proportions to distort reality with tiny cardboard models or glazed ceramic. They are clearly handmade, a combination of meticulous craftsmanship with a amateurish DIY style. But that is their beauty: portraying the rebellious rock culture so zealously and with such atypical materials.

Mac Demarco sings in this deep, breathy voice that sounds like he pulls words from the bottom of his throat. And he coos with such enthusiasm about ladies in hot pants and nightclubs. The man sounds goddamn sleazy. There’s obviously a kind of persona being fostered here; his album Rock and Roll Night Club is humorously punctuated with several over-the-top radio bumpers. It may be partly ironic? Whatever. His classic rock inspired, seedy country swagger is incredibly fun.

Wallpaper is back! And I used a ton of it in my new Rock Series of paintings. In all of my work, I try to explore the juxtaposition of something innocent meeting something more subversive because to me it’s an exploration of growing up, and the human experience.  In this series, I used kids wallpaper to showcase a history of Hard Rock, while maintaining my own visual style and sensibility.

With the Legendary Pink Dots, they somehow suspend this preoccupation. They inspire me to be more free and spontaneous, all I hear is creativity in their music. As many fans of the genre know, Turkey produced a lot of great psych folk and rock in the ’70s. 3 Hur-El and Mogollar are two of the more well-known acts from those days, their louder, more rock ‘n’ roll sound drowning the likes of singer/composer Bulent Ortacgil, a more soft-spoken and contemplative figure in Turkish rock history. His quiet, spare, and understated acoustic style punctuated have garnered him comparisons to Nick Drake and Cat Stevens, and with the recent re-release by Korean label 1 Numera of his 1974 debut album, Benimle Oynar Misin, he’s set to reach a new generation of fans outside his home country.

Having played South By South West over the past couple of years, Golden Bear have just released a souped up new EP, Everest, which sees the Texan rock band playing together like they would at a rehearsal or a show. Says frontman Chris Gregory: ‘I was a little anxious about being able to approximate the sound of our live show in the first place, but I figured to hell with it-let’s give it a shot. And I’m glad we did. There were no endless nights of playing the same song 150 times, no overscrutinaztion, and in all honesty, no hitches in the plan whatsoever. It was loose, rowdy, and rewarding, just like our shows’.
