Turkish-born, New York-based artist Deniz Ozuygur’s hilarious pieces tell sophisticated jokes that also, via crude, distorted, and disembodied forms, tap into a more innocent and tactile relationship we had with our bodies in grade school. Her Self High Five Machine is hysterical, as is her Alterations series, in which she messes with common kids’ items — Gummi Worms, Funyuns, a gum eraser — before repackaging them and returning them to the manufacturer. Nestled in the hills of Napa Valley, Bardessono is the newest creation of eco-developer Phil Sherburne and architect Ron Mitchell. Completed just seven weeks ago, the luxurious inn and spa is currently pursuing Leed certification and includes rammed earth walls, water treatment systems, and solar and geothermal energy systems. The buildings were built to pay homage to the land, and include recycled cypress wood for the windows, doors, and floors. Read more

Named after the first openly gay politician in US history, Harvey Milk make some rather testosterone-heavy tunes. While appealing mostly to the stoner-rock and indie-metal set, the quintet from Athens, Georgia, aren’t afraid of a little melody, as the almost pop track Motown on their latest album, Life … the Best Game in Town, proves. But more often than not, the band gets down and dirty with some knuckle-dragging sludge rock. Amid the haze of searing guitar squeals, menacing power chords, and seismic bass rumbling, though, are some almost math-rock flourishes that hint at the brains behind the brawn.
