Riikka Sormunen’s paintings are stylised depictions of fantasy worlds. She also paints novelty figurines to immerse in these beautiful environments, where darkness seeps in, lending them unusual and thought-provoking qualities.
I think Sydney Phillips Hardin has hit on something great with her series of portraits of iconic women (Sarah Palin, the Madonna and Child, Botticelli’s Venus on a half-shell) painted as blow-up dolls, certainly with regard to her aim to ‘retaliate’ against media packaging of female sexuality. Illustrator Paul X. Johnson’s portrait of Rachel from Blade Runner really was the piece that won me over, but the rest of his noir-ish work is pretty spectacular too. Read more
