I just adore the retro, colorful paintings of Vancouver illustrator Ryan Heshka. Teeming with curvacious bombshells and sci-fi monsters running amok, Heshka most certainly has the retro B-movie aesthetic down to an artform. As an added bonus, Heshka even dedicates a section of his portfolio to his childhood drawings. This guy clearly had skills from the get-go.

I discovered Henryk Siemiradzki after doing a Wikipedia search on the word decadence and found a whole lot of his art. The detail is insane.

Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Set in the 1980s, We Own The Night shows a real nostalgia for that period — particularly in the costumes. Read more

Architect Jean Nouvel is on a roll. His projects are popping up everywhere, but this may be the grandest. In choosing Nouvel’s design, the competition judges stressed that this ‘is the most important act of architecture since the Eiffel Tower’. Read more

Monarch are an incredibly grim, lumbering doom metal band from Basque country in France. Frontwoman Emilie Bresson is one of those rare female singers in metal that’s at once fierce and raspy, yet identifiably female, creating a haunting, menacing sound that can stand up against the most ragingly macho bands out there.

Look closely. This stunning storybook gown was made entirely from recycled Golden Books, all sewn together with metallic gold thread. Heck, even the bodice is made from the books’ foil spines. We love. Read more
