A major name in fair-trade and ethical fashion since the early 1990′s and former creative director of the ethical jewelry company Made, Sam Ubdhi is a world famous artist who is now in collaboration with People Tree. Ubdhi is well-known in eco circles for her handcrafted pieces that use recycled materials (such as horn, bone, and tusks) from the food industry. Self-taught in jewelry-making, Ubdhi is a true eco force to be reckoned with.
Everyone seems obsessed with the apocalypse and the resurgence of tribalism, but few artist render these end-times visions so effectively as Philadelphia-based painter Christopher Davison. If the 2012 prophecies come true, Davison should be the one to document them. Read more
Richard Colman is one hell of an awesome human being. I go back and forth on whether or not I enjoyed him more in his drinking days or post drinking days. I guess there are pros and cons to both scenarios. He is a very talented man and a close friend. We have exchanged ideas over the years and pushed each other in the true spirit of oneupsmanship. He’s proven to be a great source of inspiration.
Sydney indie heroes (in the nicest possible way), The Paper Scissors (TPS to those that know the secret handshake) have made a video for their new single, The Bandit. And it’s good. Damn good.
Greek firm A31 just completed this sturdy-looking art warehouse for Alexandros Liapis in Dilesi, Boeotia. From some angles, the concrete structure looks like a fallout-proof bunker, but from the front it looks like an open and airy barn, the exterior looking very much like wood. Read more
I’m enjoying reading the insight and witticisms of the Indie Breakfast Club blog, which casts a wide net over entrepreneurship and what it means to be one and still have a conscience.
I usually steer clear of anything smelling of disco-breaks: the thought just bores me. But with Padded Cell’s new release, Night Must Fall, I see a bit of a U-turn on the horizon. There’s something really interesting going on here: it’s a cocktail of 80′s swank laced with woozy narcotic undertones and flecked with snappy drum loops: weird, undeniably dark and ominous, but nonetheless pretty damn satisfying. These vegan designer bags from Matt & Nat are made out of anywhere between 15 and 55 recycled plastic bottles. It also uses no leather, which is a big plus given that according to the UN, raising cattle generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined.
