I chanced upon Indonesian artist Syaiful A Rachman’s 153 x 153 cm portrait of Michael Jackson at OdeToArt gallery recently, and it was amazing to zoom in on the acrylic painting and see how crowds of tiny little anonymous people make up the big picture.

Rachman has used a similar approach and point of view for portraits of other pop culture icons such as Jimi Hendrix, Angelina Jolie, Bruce Lee, Marilyn Monroe, The Beatles and even Spiderman. There’s a bit of hint here about how how these icons draw their power from common people from all factions of society.

To do a portrait of a person is to dig deep into his or her soul, to understand what they do and why they do it, and then make it visible. When this person is a celebrity, the job is harder because they’ve already gone through many interpretations. Still, you have to find something new. Well, in a human you can always find something new, you just have to look and listen. These portraits depict famous people in a honest and personal way, reminiscencent of early photography and the Flemish painters.

But trust me, it’s all worth it in the end when you see the incredible life-like portraits she creates from the human blueprints she finds. These DNA portraits combine cutting-edge science and art to create her collection of 3D printed heads. Hagborg can even bring loved ones back to life with her amazing technique.

It’s that moment when you reach under the table and immediately regret it when your fingers touch the crusty, dried out secondhand gum stuck to the underside of the tabletop. Old gum is repulsive, right? Think again. Artist Anna Sophia Matveeva has completely re-invented the “medium” of secondhand gum. She used the sticky substance to create the awesome, large scale pop art style portraits. Each piece requires over a thousand pieces of gum. But don’t worry, Matveeva had some help from friends. She didn’t have to chew it all!

A child’s bedroom tells a lot about their personality, and it is also a reflection of their life story. James Mollison’s series entitled Where Children Sleep provides a truthful and sobering narrative about the circumstances in which children from all around the world live … and sleep. Mollison’s series is published in a book for children to read, but it is also highly poignant visual for adults.
