Forget everything you know about death metal. Forget there’s even a genre called death metal. Brisbane-based quintet Portal just made it completely irrelevant with their latest album, Swarth. Their avalanche of muddy, raspy, blown-out noise sounds like a thousand Roman torture devices used at once in a cave during an earthquake — sawing, crunching, growling, clanging, and evoking pretty much every bad thought you’ve ever had, every moment of agony. No clear riffs. No blast beats. Just unbridled, yet murderously and coldly precise mayhem. These guys are not to be messed with. There is no more bar to be set. It’s over. It’s done.

The graduate exhibition of third year graphic design students at Sydney’s Design Centre is called 342 Seconds and relates to the estimated time required to view the show. The exhibition takes place on December 3 and looks to be well worth checking out, if these works by Jenny Lee [above] and Sean Batchelor [below] are anything to go by. This website hosts a nice collection of quirky, sometimes mind-boggling, sculptures from around the world. There’s a certain Dali-esque feel to a lot of them – those surreal, dreamy hallucinations turned into a warped reality. I’ve always been a sucker for art that really catches you out for a few seconds, and these certainly do that.
Given the amount of talent he has, it’s a mystery why German producer Pantha Du Prince not received more attention than he has. His minimal tech soundscapes are surprisingly melodic and moody, as reflected on his epic track, Asha, as good a starting point to the music of this German electro whiz as any.
These rings are handmade in Italy by Ashanti Raffaele Cinzio and come in a set of three, shaped flat and polished in a brushed finish. One sterling silver, one yellow bronze and one rose bronze. The rings individually measure 2mm height on the thin side and raise gradually around the ring to a height of 50mm to the feature side. As a set, the total band width consistently measures 7mm.
