The first time I saw Howling Bells play was a blustery Sydney evening a few years back when I’d gotten the word from singer Juanita Stein’s brother — Ari — that an ‘event’ was going down and I was to do whatever it took to get in to see it. I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to revel in New Jersey artist Heejin Roh’s impossibly subtle graphite drawings in person recently. Roh is a fresh out graduate of the SVA Illustration Master’s Program, which had it’s annual student show recently. Having been so impressed with Roh’s work at the show, I was pleased to discover that her images translate so nicely into a tiny jpeg on my computer screen. I only wish there were more!
I love the interesting lines and clever use of sustainable materials found in the Klein Bottle House, a holiday place in Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. The architects, McBride Charles Ryan, based the design around the concept of the Klein Bottle, ‘a descriptive model of a surface developed by topological mathematicians’. Read more
I was initially drawn to Belgium-born Christophe Coppen’s jewellery before discovering that he produces two mens and womens collections each year, consisting not only of jewellery, also of but couture pieces and home accessories. With seven interior collections to his name, and a past history as both a theater director and an actor, his work is an expression of his creative brilliance.
Scott Teplin’s candy-colored paintings and incredibly detailed line drawings of wrecked vehicles as well as his Sims-like images of surreal, fantastical urban structures express both malaise and wonderment at the spaces we have created for ourselves in modern life. Read more
FFFFOUND! is a fun website that allows you to bookmark your favorite images from the Internet and share them with fellow users, sort of like a del.icio.us specifically for pictures. The site is still in private beta and not currently supported on Mac, but as its collection of images expands, it’s likely to become much more widely available.
I’m really excited about the Melbourne band Plug-in City. They remind me of Belle & Sebastian, The Kooks and Cut Copy all in one. What more can us New Yorkers ask for?
