We checked in with London-based singer-songwriter Polly Scattergood and asked her about the music that’s inspiring her own offbeat pop sound. She started by propping the Bonnie Prince Billy song, I See a Darkness: ‘This song breaks my heart. I find the darkness of his words very comforting. I love the way he tells a story in his songs — though they are sometimes uncomfortably honest. It’s like reading some beautiful poet’s diary’. Read the rest of Polly Scattergood’s Secret Playlist.

Damn this song is catchy! Yacht is the cunning alter-ego for duo Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans — an accomplished science writer, artist, and veteran of the LA noise scene. After they recorded a tongue-in-cheek love letter to LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy in the form of their track, Summer Song, Murphy signed them to DFA Records. All of which brings us to their new album, See Mystery Lights, and this track off it: the bouncy, raga tinged Pyschic City. We have it available for free download via the Music Download section of Lost At E Minor, along with new tracks by La Snacks, Magic Wands, Polly Scattergood, and Reed KD.

Having collaborated over the years with the likes of Amanda Lepore, Larry Tee, Boy George, and David Lachapelle, Cazwell’s fun mix of electrified dance music and old school hip hop embodies the same spirit of goofball experimentation that has been the hallmark of artists like M.I.A., Neneh Cherry, Eminem and Deee-lite. All of which is wonderfully realised on the catchy as all hell lead single — I Seen Beyonce At Burger King — from his new album, Watch My Mouth. You can download it for free, along with new music from Deastro, Mos Def and Polly Scattergood, via the Music Download section of the Lost At E Minor site [psst, it's in the third column]

German-based Michael Arndt spent six years and a bucket of dough constructing a McLaren Formula One car from 956,000 matchsticks and 1,686 tubes of glue. The car, which can be broken down into 45 pieces for transport, has a top speed of zero miles per hour. But damn, it looks fun to drive. Read more

Now, we’ve all had a fan crush at some stage of our lives, but Parserisas, a 56-year-old newspaper vendor from Mexico, has taken it to a whole new level. He has turned his body into a shrine for Julia Roberts, with 82 tattoos of her in various scenes from her vast library of movies. Crazy? Yes. But what a way to do it! Read more

The Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project involved fourteen countries around the world filling crates with the best of their local nightlife and exchanging their country’s crate with another. We were there all the way, following Australia’s involvement. And the final stage, with Brazil and Australia swapping crates, was a beauty! As this video attests.

I interviewed the mysterious Suitman some time ago for the Australian magazine, Riot. Even then it was clear that, with his immaculately pressed suit and crisp white shirts, he was an icon – both stylistically and conceptually. So it’s no surprise to hear about his latest adventure, The New Grand Tour, ‘an episodic art project featuring revolving guest artists with hyphenated cultural and geographical backgrounds. The latest band to make LA proud is tropical-nu wave act Abe Vigoda. These guys are so new and so exciting that even your grandparents don’t know who they are. Yet! They describe themselves as tropical punk, but I like to think of them as nihilistic rockers — no form, no shape, just chaos. If LA’s new breed of punk popstars such as Health, Meiko Meiko and Pocohauntas make you tremble, then this band are sure to get you very worked up.
