Despite the significant increase of mobile devices with camera functions, the good ol’ polaroid is still around and hasn’t lost a punce of its charme. Bastian Kalous, from Germany, experiments with expired polaroid film and has created an impressive body of work over the past few years. His subjects are typically mysterious landscape scenes wiith lonely passengers.

Nigo, founder and designer of ultra- hip Japanese ‘anti-brands’, Human Made and A Bathing Ape, has collaborated with Austrian company Impossible on a new black and white Polaroid film. A longtime collector of Polaroid cameras, Nigo created the PX 600 silver shade edition, inspired by classic military apparel. The dark green frame and black and white photo finish is a stylish example for the endless, creative possibilities of analog instant polaroids.

The majority of people today use their iPhones to take photos. However, how do we conveniently convert one of our snap-shot moments into a print without resorting to a big printer? The Impossible Project, revitaliser of Polaroid film and purveyor of refurbished Polaroid hardware, wants to make the moments we capture Polaroid ones. its proposed Instant Lab would do this in a, well, instant. It’s using Kickstarter to help fund the project with a $250,000 goal and on its first day, raised $A150,000. To make a pledge visit their Kickstarter page  – and be one of the first to get your own Instant Lab half price before it hits stores next year.

The Polaroid is now IT-literate. Say hello to its lithe byte-ish form, the Polaroid Z2300 Instant Digital Camera, which will read and write on — gasp — an SD card. Looking like the Polaroid Land Camera 1000 in disguise, the 10-megapixel gadget straddles the best of two worlds: it will save your images digitally, and, true to all Polaroids everywhere, has an inbuilt printer to print out these snaps. Sounds impressive. Ships in mid-August.

The team that created Polapremium, where you can still buy vintage polaroid cameras and film, have just launched The Impossible Project, looking out for the future of instant integral film, which feeds polaroid cameras. The objective is to restart production of analog integral film in 2010, so they have acquired from Polaroid old equipment and a factory in the Netherlands. Now they have a year in which to re-invent instant film. They’re looking for ideas and support through their website, with the mission being to innovate not just to rebuild.
