Artist Heidi Lender donned a black wig (with the occasional prop) and posed her way in front of varied black graphic backdrops. Inspired by her own mother, Lender’s photography series gives a firm nod to all the superwomen of the world (our mothers) who manage to do it all, in style as well.

In Heidi Lender’s own words: ‘Mom played the roles of wife, mother, daughter, income-earner, independent-thinker, hostess, dinner-maker, family accountant, homework tutor, and household organizer without a bat of her mascara’d eyelashes. Preoccupied with growing up, I was oblivious to this amazing juggling act.

‘But from my adult woman perspective, it seems a heroic and near-impossible feat – not to mention a struggle. And, yet, mom did it in style. She never left the house without lipstick and liner, her hair teased and sprayed just so, and kept her standing appointment at the beauty parlor each Friday. My mother wasn’t perfect, but whether driving carpool, volunteering or planning trips, she played it all effortlessly, nary a complaint or sign of stress, and passed on her capabilities to me.’

I found out about Jason Nocito a couple of months ago through a photographer friend and I’ve been in love with his work ever since. When I looked him up, I hadn’t realized he had been responsible for some music photography that I had already been a fan of – I believe he shoots a lot for Fader. His personal projects, however, are what really get me. His most recent book, I Heart Transylvania, is a document of a long-distance relationship with his now wife, who at the time, lived in Vancouver. The whole book is a love-letter, and he captures such an incredible essence of both his subject, and his spaces, through light and movement. I’m such a fan.

Nick Azzaro and his wife, Yen, run the company Chin-Azzaro Art Consultation and Commerical Photography. But in addtion to his commerical photography, Azzaro works on his own fine art photography projects. Using a set of self-imposed rules in the spirit of the Dogme 95 manifesto, Azzaro photographs himself as six different characters in his apartment building in a photographic series that evokes a still frame, film noir movie.

Canadian photographer Hana Pesut’s Switcheroo project has her photographing a pair of subjects twice each time, with both subjects in their own outfits first, then wearing each other’s outfits and stances next. Fun stuff.
